CHAPTER ONE

Daren Coles spiked up his black-ink hair with Style It Up gel. He ran his fingers through the front part of his hair. He smiled at himself in the mirror and approved of his white t-shirt that showed his muscled chest, and his Nike shorts. Hands in his pockets Daren ran down the stairs and into the kitchen. His mom was at work and his dad was out of town for business. He chewed on an apple and glanced at the clock. 6:57. Too early to go to school now, he thought. Burlive Gil High School started at seven in the morning. Going to school on time or early? That’s way geeky. He’s too cool for that. He smirked. Daren remembered Tony Swears, the class nerd.  Someone Daren hated. He loved to see him beat up or upset. He would always have a good laugh with his buddies. Daren was meeting them today at Subway before school. It was two streets away from the high school.

Daren put on his airwalk shoes and walked out of the doorway, his neon green backpack over his shoulder and skateboard in hand.  Daren locked the front door and headed down the block. Soon, he was sitting in a high chair in the Subway, sipping on soda with his friends. Mike Krehlamov has skater hair and is a basketball pro. Toby Husfin is a skateboarder. His hair always sticks out everywhere and he likes to wear colorful clothes. (Right now he had a white large t-shirt with bright orange and blue Graffiti.) Ryder Aughis is a hot dude. He is known for his looks and skateboarding moves. And Ben Devies, he is a quiet guy but daring too.

“Hey Daren, let’s go make some skating moves,” suggested Ryder.

“Sure, man.”

The gang walked to the skate park. It wasn’t so large but it isn’t small either.  Toby made an Ollie on his board and rode toward the front slope. Still drinking his Mt. Dew, Ben lazily followed Ryder and Mike, on his skateboard. Daren caught up with him on his own board with purple wheels.

“What’s up?”

He could clearly see that Ben wanted something.

“Dude, can you show me how to do the pop shove-it trick?”

“Yeah.”

Daren showed him the trick a few times and explained how to move his feet and body to make the trick right.  Daren also showed him how to do it over the curb. Ben got a good start but his landing wasn’t right yet.

“Let’s head out, guys,” said Daren.

Mike was glad. He didn’t like skateboarding that much. Basketball seemed way more fascinating.

“Yeah. First period is almost done.”

The guys rode the rest of the way on their boards, laughing and joking around. When they got to the school they each checked in the office and separated to their classes. Daren had first period with Ryder. It was literature class. They came into Mrs. Hoirs’ classes when she was in the middle of explaining the different equilibriums in stories and books. She stopped short when the teenagers came in.

“Mr. Coles? Mr. Aughis? Why are you, gentlemen late? Class started forty minutes ago.”

Her stern voice seemed to echo in the quiet classroom. All students’ gazes where on the popular guys. Daren spoke up.

“Dentist appointment.”

He slipped into his seat in the back.

“Family emergency,” Ryder mumbled unsurely. Do I sound dumb or what? Can’t think of a good lie now, he thought.

“I wouldn’t like this late notice to be unexcused, so I want each of your parents to confirm this.”

With a stern glance she continued her speech. Daren smirked. Yeah, right, he was going to tell his parents he was skipping class! He looked over at Ryder who already had his stare on some new girl in class. Daren sank in his seat and popped a piece of Trident gum in his mouth.
