CHAPTER FIVE

Daren’s mom hugged him when he came in the huge kitchen.

“Oh, honey. You’re here! Dave!! Daren is home.”

“What do we have to eat?”

“You can have a bar in the cabinet. We’ll have dinner together as a family, later.”

Daren could hear footsteps pounding down the stairs.  Daren’s dad appeared in the kitchen. He had a pair of trousers on and a black t-shirt. Like Daren, he had a muscled built body and a handsome face.

“Hello son!” He patted Daren on the back. “How are you? How’s school?”

  Daren rolled his eyes.

“Everything is fine, Dad. Can I go now?” He sounded annoyed.

“Uh, yeah….yeah, sure.” Daren’s dad was lost.

Daren ran up the stairs, two at a time. He came in his room and pressed power on his CD player. It was given to him by his mom a year ago on his birthday. A song blared out in his room. He and Mike hung up speakers in the 5 corners of his room. It’s pretty nice. Bling. A text message. He took out his phone. He grinned. It was Ashley. Maybe she’ll lift up his mood.

Ashley: hi daren J

Daren: hey whats up?

Ashley: can we meet up @ the public library downtown 2 start working on our project

Daren: sure is 5 pm k?

Ashley: yeah. Which places do u want 2 do; france, florida,Delaware, denvere

Daren: idk, u choose  J

Ashley: is florida and Delaware ok?

Daren: yep. C ya l8r

Cool. Maybe tomorrow’s “studying” with Ashley would keep his mind off this mess at home. Daren fell on his bed, threw his feet up and closed his eyes. Without knowing he drifted off for a few minutes…

While this was happening Daren’s parents we’re talking in the kitchen after Daren left.

Mr. Coles sighed.

“Michelle, I have no idea what’s wrong with that boy.  Why is he acting like I’m making him paint my toenails?”

“I honestly, don’t know.” His wife answered sadly.

“What has he been doing lately while I wasn’t at home? What kind of grades does he have in school?”

“Well, he mostly skateboards and hangs out with his group of guys. His grades are good B’s and a few C’s. I didn’t get any phone calls from any teachers so I don’t think he’s getting in any trouble.”

“Uh-huh. What group of guys? Luke, Tofy, Flyter, and Dan?”

“Um, no. Mike, Toby, Ryder and Ben….You know you really need to get into the boy’s life, David.”

“I know.” Mr. Coles sighed sadly. “I just…I’m just busy, that’s all.”

“I have an idea! I read it somewhere.”

“What?”

“You two need a guy’s night out!”

“Like go on a picnic and play football?”

  Mrs. Coles laughed.

“No! That’s not what teenage boys are interested in these days. Maybe go see a basketball game, go bowling, or go to one of his skateboarding shows.”

Mr. Coles stood quietly thinking. Skateboarding? Since when does he skateboard? Do I really not know my son that much, he thought.

“Yes, I think I will do something like that soon.”

“And by soon, you mean this week.”

“But I got a meeting scheduled-”

“The meeting can wait,” interrupted Mrs. Coles.

“By the way, what’s up with his hairdo?”

“It’s considered “cool” and I think he might be asking for an earring soon.”

“What?!”

   Mrs. Coles laughed.

“I’m kidding, David.”

They joked around some more and then the two adults discussed their plans for dinner.

Let me kno what you think!! :D You gotta lemmi know :))
