CHAPTER SEVEN
“No, Ben. Lift you left foot up and press with your right.”
Ben tried
“Yeah, man! You got it. But practice your ending more.
“Ok.” Ben frowned. He preferred simple bike riding.
Ben tried the shove-it trick again but his landing still through him off balance. He groaned.
“You’ll get it right, soon,” laughed Daren.
The gang wasn’t the only ones on a guy’s night out. Several older high schoolers hanged around the park, too. They were mostly on scooters and BMX bikes. Toby tried showing off his skate moves and when he tried the boneless move up the ramp but he didn’t land on his board right and he tumbled off balance. This wasn’t like him; he is usually really good at the boneless. Several high schoolers snickered. Toby cussed.
“Dude, don’t even try,” teased Mike.
Toby threatened to punch him if he doesn’t shut up. Mike shrugged. He was kind of bored. Mike just watched Daren ‘train’ Ben. Skateboarding wasn’t his favorite.
After a few minutes, Ben gave up and got on his bike instead. He rode down the slope and the sped up on the other side of it. When he reached the top he and the bike flew up into air. In the right moment he twisted the bike in a perfect 360 move. Now the older guys noticed. One guy with a mohawk, even cheered. Ben’s face flushed with pride. Oh yeah!
On the other hand, Toby had twisted his face in disgust. Dang, he’s good! Compared to my failing skating, he thought.
Daren and Mike grinned.
“It’s hilarious. Toby looks like he just ate a banana-salad, bean milkshake.”
The guys cracked up.
“Dude, that’s gross.”
Daren mentioned over to Toby to join them. Toby rode his skateboard to them. He didn’t try any tricks this time.
“Dude, what’s his problem? That little tweep is pro on that BMX!”
“Yeah,” the guys agreed.
Just then a whistle of ‘you got it, man!’ came from the other group. Ben mastered a no-feet-on-pedal in the air. Amazing. Daren and Mike joined in and cheered even louder. In a few minutes Ben pedaled over to the gang, beaming.
“Gotta admit….You’re a swag bike rider.” Toby raised his hands in the sign that he gives up. Ben laughed, still beaming like crazy. Daren spoke.
“Congrats, dude. You got the attention of all the guys over there.” He nodded their way.
“Yeah. Did you see the wheelie I did up that small ramp?”
Mike pretended to be hurt.
“Oh, really? Man, you don’t have to brag. We, poor people aren’t that good.”
Ben was really happy. Daren and the guys knew he was good on a BMX but they didn’t seem to care. But at least now they acted like he wasn’t just a little puppy that strolled with them wherever they went. He glanced at his watch.
“Uh, I gotta go.” The guys nodded.
“I think I’ll head home, too,” said Mike. Daren stared at him.
“What?”
Mike’s expression was blank. He followed Ben on his board.
“What’s up with that?” Toby asked.
“I have no idea.”
The guys walked out of the skate park. It was too dark too hang around there. Daren’s iphone said 10:30. They walked, talking about BMX bikes, tricks and things they’ve seen on Youtube. The two of them strolled out of the now dark neighborhood and into the street.
“Hey, let’s go to the gas station, suggested Daren.
“Sure.”
When they got to the station Toby was disappointed.
“All those chocolate bars and it’s all closed up!”
“Screw that,” agreed Daren. Daren laughed and Toby noticed the wild look in his eye. What is he up to now? Toby peered into the window. The dark surrounded them and the lamppost flickered. Just then Toby saw Daren’s reflection in the window: he picked up a rock, aiming at the window. His eye’s wild.
“Dude, what you are doing?!”
“You want chocolate, right?”
“Yeah,” Toby said slowly, “but not that way. Chill. You wanna get in trouble?”
Daren smirked.
“Scared?” He laughed and before Toby can protest, he hurled the rock. The sound of shattering glass filled their ears. Wait….and the squealing of the alarm.
“The alarm!”
The guys ran. They ran into the neighborhood and stopped at the edge of the skate park. Gulping for air, the guys burst out laughing. That was close!
“Don’t move and raise up your hands!”
The guys turned, stunned. They came face to face with a policeman. Oh crap, thought Daren.
