CHAPTER THREE

“Hey,” offered Daren. She gave him an amazing smile.

“Hey there.”

“Partners?”

“Sure. What’s your name?”

“Daren.” He answered, trying to charm her with his dashing smile.

“Nice name. I’m Ashley.”

So Ryder was right. How does he seem to know every cutie on earth?! Daren put his hands in his pockets and strolled next to Ashley, so close that their elbows bumped. Ashley had a bag over her shoulder and it seemed she knew what he was doing…She placed the bag over the shoulder next to Daren and increased the space between them every time he would get closer. He made a face. This girl is playing hard to get or she really dislikes him.

The class walked to the library and all the partners separated into different ways in the non-fiction section. Daren and Ashley headed toward the countries and cities.

“Would you get the ones about France and Florida?”

“Huh? Oh yeah. Sure.” He almost forgot what he was here for. He slowly looked for France.

“Are you new here?” He asked.

  She looked up.

“Yeah. I moved here a couple months ago. And figure this isn’t your first year.”

“That’s right.”

“What do you like doing? As your hobby, I mean.” She didn’t look up from the book she was flipping through. Ha! Found France, thought Daren. He shrugged.

“Skateboard, chill, hang around with friends.”

“Uh-huh.” Ashley’s hair fell over her face and she seemed very interested in the book she was holding. Daren came up.

“What is it?”

Startled she looked up and smiled.

“This? Oh, it’s a book on old Bible times. ”

Daren snorted. Then he noticed the mistake he done. Ashley pressed her lips together and her eyes somehow looked sad.

“That’s not what I meant! I just…..I um….It’s kind of funny, you know, for you to be interested in those old guys.”

“Did you get the books?” She changed the subject.

“Uh, I got France but I can’t find Florida.”

  Ashley walked to the F shelf and searched it with her eyes. In a moment, she pulled out a book with Florida printed across the cover in bold. Daren cussed at himself in his head. He screwed up. How does she see through him? He tried charming her. With a smile plastered on his face he said;

“Hey, thanks sweetie. I guess I just missed it, huh?”

  She laughed.

“I guess so.”

Daren took a deep breath. Whew! This is one tough girl! He followed her out of the library and into the classroom.  The teacher spoke up when everyone was seated.

“Listen up.  You’re current partners would be the ones you will do the oral presentation with. I’ll pass a paper around, write yours and your partner’s name. Keep contact with your partner. I don’t care how; email, text, call, whatever you like.”

Daren let Ashley do the writing. Getting her phone number would be great. Too great. Luck has turned to face him once again. He smirked. He’ll get that girl no matter what.
