CHAPTER SIX

  “What? When? Why?” Daren was stunned. He had one pair of surprising parents. When did his dad decide it was time to hang out together? Daren was about to protest when his mom said;

“Why not? I mean, it’s not like you and your father hangout often.”

“Yes. And you get to choose where we go.”  Mr. Coles agreed.

Daren thought for a minute. It would be cool but Dad? Bowling? Or shooting hoops or even just talking. All he talks about is his business meetings and what the professors and directors said. Gross.  Daren decided to outrun his dad.

“How about basketball at the gym.”  If you can pull this one off. Mr. Coles looked unsure. He looked at his wife and she gave him a little nod.

“Of course. That would be perfect, son.”

  What?, thought Daren. He’s got to be kidding!! This isn’t possible! Daren doubted. He knew his dad would give up at the last minute. He changed the subject;

“What are we having for dinner?”

“Spaghetti with meatballs, tomato salad and an Italian salad with a name I can’t pronounce,” answered Mrs. Coles.

“That sounds good,” said Mr. Coles.

The parents walked out of the room and Daren’s mom yelled a loud ‘Dinner’s in thirty minutes.’  Daren got off his bed and texted Mike.

Daren: hey guess what?

Mike: ur dad yelled u off again

Daren: nah we’re going 2 the gym for basketball

Mike: w/ ur dad?? No way!

Daren:  that’s what I said

Mike: sux 4 u, when?

Daren just noticed he didn’t know when and at what time.

Daren: dang it-idk. I’ll find out @ dinner 2night

Mike: sure. BTW I have a game next saturday

Daren: great. I’ll b there w/ the guys

Mike: k, c ya and goodluck w/ ur dad

Daren: sure, screw that :P

He sighed. What was his dad’s problem? Really.

In thirty minutes, the family was seated at the wide, wooden kitchen table, eating in an awkward silence. Daren spoke up grimly.

“About the thing for basketball. When? What time? You know, I have plans.”

“How about tomorrow?” Mr. Coles suggested a little too brightly.

“Nope, I’m busy.” He gulped down a meatball. No way is he going with his dad on a Saturday!

“On what day can you?” His dad asked.

“Wednesday, I guess.” Daren shrugged carelessly. Mr. Coles’ face scrunched up. Probably the day he has one of his stupid meetings, smirked Daren.

“Uh…” He cleared his throat, “sure, Daren. That would be great, absolutely great.” Daren’s dad looked like he had just rejected a Lamborghini for free.

They cleared the table and Daren went up to his room.

~There’s something about the sunshine, baby. I’m seeing you in a whole new light. ~

Daren looked at the screen. Ryder.

“Hey, man. What’s up?”

Ryder said something but Daren couldn’t make out what it was. He could hear music blaring and a whole crowd of people yelling, laughing and talking. Way too loud. Daren ended the call. Ryder is parting like always. Daren heard that older guys at parties like that drink. He was disgusted.

Another call rang out and Daren picked up his iphone at the first ring.

“Hello?”

“Hey, dude. It’s me, Mike.”

“Oh, hey.”

“So when are you going?”

“What? Oh.  We’re going sometime on Wednesday.”

“Oh cool. I thought you were going to be stupid enough to do it tomorrow.”

“I know, right?”

“Dude, I’m so in for a trip tonight.”

“Totally. Let’s go to the skate park.”

“I guess so.”

“Cool. You call Toby. I think he’ll go for it. I’ll call Ben.”

“What about Ryder?”

“He’s parting.”

“Oh ok. See you at the park.”

Daren pressed End. He called Ben and explained their plans.

“Sure. But I’ll head home before ten.”

  Daren laughed.

“What, did you get your mommy on you?”

  Ben sounded uncomfortable.

“Shut up.  And don’t forget to bring my BMX.”

“Sure, man. Take it easy, ok?”

“Yeah, whatever.”

  Ben is younger but he was cool enough to join their gang. Even though he can’t go anywhere after ten.  But so what? Daren isn’t aloud either but it’s not like he has to do everything his mom says. They’re just having fun!  Daren grabbed his board and sweater. Before he could open the front door, his mom spoke up;

“Daren! Where are you going?”

“I’m just going to hang around.”

  She narrowed her eyes.

“Where?”

“Just the skate park, Mom.”

“Okay, then. Come home before ten.”

Daren ran out the door and jumped on the bike. He placed his skateboard in front of him and pedaled to Billboarse Skates.
