Preston's POV

On Tuesday, Laura called her friend Clara and she brought a ton of boxes. Most had "Clara" written on them in small, curvy handwriting. Only one said "Laura" in larger letters. Seeing it made me kinda sad. Clara and I loaded them into my car while Laura was checking out at the front desk.

"So, the apartment is connected to yours?" Clara suddenly questioned.

"Ya, that's actually the main reason the last people moved out. When it was dark I thought it was the bathroom and kept peeing on their cat." I laughed. Clara looked concerned.

"Oh," I said quickly, "I don't anymore of course, I put a light up."

"Okay..."

It was obvious that Clara didn't like me. As I slammed the truck door shut, Laura rolled out in a wheelchair. She told me earlier that she needed it for two weeks, since her lungs weren't strong and couldn't take her walking. I was thankful the apartment is only on the third floor. Clara ignored me and starting chattering with Laura, about how she always dreamed that they would have an apartment together and hung out all the time. Laura smiled her amazing smile and we got into our cars. I stuck with the boxes, but it made me happy that neither of the girls had to see the blood stains on the passenger seat. Just as I left the parking lot, I thought if i had ever had the courage to tell Laura how I feel.

Clara's POV

When we got to the apartment on 72 Penny Drive that Preston guy got out of his car and went straight for the vending machine. He quickly grabbed a soda and took a big gulp. I don't understand him. Then I get Lauren to her wheelchair, we started moving the boxes to the apartment. When we got inside, I almost broke into tears. It was a cozy place with modern touch. Perfect. Laura grinned brightly.

"Oh I love it."

"I figured you would." Preston smile." What about you, Clara?"

He tries to act social and when Laura's around, but he knows I don't like him. It seems as if he was going to take advantage of Laura or me in some way. And that door that connects us? That's just weird.

"I like it. it's just like I imagine the kind of home I would live in, but it won't really be home until we unpack all these boxes." I tried to laugh but it sounded really fake.

"I guess I'll just get the rest of the boxes up here and then leave you two to unpack." Then Preston was out of the room. Laura seemed suddenly down. "What's wrong?"

" You sure your parents are okay with paying all the rent? I feel like I should pay some too."

I gave her a hug,"I told you they don't mind. even though I'm 21 and considered an adult they still like to pay for my stuff."

Laura gave a small smile. "You're so lucky your parents are rich."

"Let's not talk about it."

I didn't like to think how lucky I was compared to Laura. It made me feel ashamed for her, and I wanted to help her even though I couldn't. The most I can do is pay for her hospital bill and rent.

"Anyway I'm actually applying for a job in the area..."

Laura was ecstatic. "Really?!?! That's so great what kind of job is it?"

"Nothing too fancy," I giggled, "I'm going to be a pharmacist at CVS for a while then I'll go to college."

"That's great Clara I'm really happy for you."

There was a small silence.

"Why don't we order some chicken wings and pizza?" I offer.

"It's like you read my mind." we laugh and I grab the phone.

(The Next Day)

Clara is out getting interviewed for her job and I haven't seen Preston since Tuesday morning. I wonder if he's just being nice and won't talk to me ever again. I push the thought out of my mind. Meanwhile I'm sitting on my couch (I'm so happy apartment came furnished) and I'm watching some old anime from 1992. The couch is pale pink and has matching pillows; it's almost softer than the bed I sleep in. After turning off the TV from boredom, I slide my way off the couch into the wheelchair. For my second day, I seemed to be doing pretty good. Soon I am over at the kitchen I open the door. What was inside goes as follows:

- Leftover pizza (the box has a big CLARA on it)

-24 cans of Diet Coke

-The Tupperware dish with a few chicken wings inside (my name is on that one)

-One gallon of milk

-Grape juice

-A couple of cheese sticks

-and a package of chocolate chip cookies

I grab a cheese stick and take a big bite. It's so relieving. Just when I had finished Clara burst through the door.

"I got the job! I don't even have any medical experience but I got it!" I shrieked with joy and gave her a high five.

"We should go to Steak and Shake to celebrate!!! On me!" Clara beamed. She was proud of herself and I was too.

"Alright, let's go but you have to drive." I winked. We went out to the car and made jokes the whole trip.

"Have you ever heard the joke about the man who had carrots in his ears?"

"No..."

"That's okay he never did either."
