Laura's POV
Preston smiles and grabs my arm, dragging me out to the car. I'm confused but eager to see where we are going. His hair is shining in the sunlight, and every feature of his face is enhanced by his smile. For some odd reason, the first question that pops in my mind is if his teeth always were perfect, or if he got braces, what he looked like before. Either way, he was probably the most popular kid in school. I hop into the car and buckle the seatbelt quickly, trying not to choke myself. Preston starts the car and we are off;he's muttering under his breath the whole time with an excited but almost nervous tone.
"Where is it again.... Do I take a left or right..... Dang it I just want to..." He cuts himself off and looks over at me. I smirk and say,
"Lost?"
He grins, "Nope. We're here."
I looked out the window. Like magic, the outside world was no longer the road flying by us, but we were stopped at a beach. I must have been spacing the whole trip. The sun was lower in the sky, and the shore looked pretty empty. I get out of the vehicle and run to the sand. Preston comes chasing after me and catches up as soon as I get to the water. I was tempted to splash him, but he was wearing a nice shirt so I wasn't sure. The next thing i knew, there was a slap of water in my face. Looks like he splashed me. I laugh and throw water at him, and soon enough we were running across the shoreline. After a while Preston slowed down and picked up some seashells. Each one was different, some with ridged edges and others smooth, almost shining. He holds them out and smiles,
"Look what I found."
"Wow," I smile, "They're beautiful."
His smile grows, "Like someone I know..."
"Hmm?"
"Oh, um, nothing." Preston shakes his head and his ears burn. We walk down the beach some more and continue to talk about random things. His friend Mitch. Clara and Patrick. The way we are both extremely socially awkward. Preston seems so relaxed talking to me, and his soft cheekbones reflect the setting sun. I look at the horizon thoughtfully, and I suggest that we stop for a bit to watch the sunset. I sit on the sandy beach, happy just to chill for a minute with Preston. We seem to be sitting surprisingly close to one another, and we watch the light fade from the ocean. I'm amazed at how vivid the colors are since I never was really able to watch the sun set as a kid. In the distance, I notice a small fin like thing in the water. Then a dolphin hops out of the water for a moment, making me giggle. A few minutes past, but time doesn't seem to be moving. Slyly, Preston quietly slips his hand into mine. He looks at me out of the corner of his eye, curious to see how I'll react. I look down slightly and smile, then take a quick glance over to him. In the pink light, he seems even cuter than usual. He looks so confident and sure of himself, as if there was anything that could ever bother him. I love every moment we were next to each other, but this was different. It was like for the first time it was real, like there was no secrets. We understood each other perfectly without even needing to speak. The sun is almost behind the horizon when we decide to head home. Our hands part for a moment when i get up but I grab his hand to help him out of the sand, and decide not to let go. We look at each other, smile, and soon after, laugh. What nerds. We joke around a bit while heading down to the car. I was almost disappointed when we had to separate in order to get in the car, but it couldn't be helped. The moon was shining above the clouds when we got back to our apartment. When Preston unlocked the door, it didn't seem like he was just a friend who was temporarily living in my apartment. Now, it was like we lived together, everything felt so normal; yet at the same time, I wouldn't tell him something like that. There is no way that someone like me with all these problems could ever be attractive to someone like Preston. But hey, a girl could dream. I went off to my bedroom while he went over to the kitchen (typical guy) I must have had my face shoved into my pillow screaming for 10 minutes before heading off to bed.
