Laura's POV

As Preston heads out to the mall to buy some clothes while he stays with us, I enter Clara's and my apartment. Everything is really neat and tidy, since I am kind of a neat freak. Wonder if having a guy stay here is going to mess up the place; it didn't bother me if it did. Preston seemed like a fairly clean guy anyway. I noticed a piece of paper stuck to the fridge, something neither Clara nor I usually would do. Snatching it off, I read over it carefully. What? Apparently, it was a letter from some college, and they had accepted Clara. Believe me, I was happy for her, but there were few problems. How would i pay for rent? Would Child Services catch me? Will Clara be ok transferring half way through the year? I thought about when I was in school before my dad stopped being able to afford it. My teachers all thought I was pretty intelligent, but I could never be able to recover entering late. I'm sure Clara would be fine though. She was particularly a genius. Speak of the devil, Clara walked through the door.

"Hey Laura! I got some good news and some bad news. What do you want to hear first?"

Before I could answer, Clara started ranting, "Ok so boss is totally so rude like I might have accidentally switched an old man's medication and killed him, but it's not like I am a criminal or something!"

"YOU DID WHAT?!?!"

"Relax, I would never be that dumb. Just wanted to see if you were paying attention. I did get fired though."

Thank Goodness she's not a murderer. "How did you get fired?"

"Well long story short I was caught going through his papers."

"Why would you..."

Clara shrugged, "I had a crazy suspicion that he was taking the drugs we were selling and being a drug lord. Turns out I was right afterall."

I shake my head. Typical Clara, doing weird shit no one understands. But you've got to love her. She seems like the perfect person to constantly joke around with, but will tell it to you straight. I just hope that wouldn't get her in too much trouble at college.

I smiled, "Speaking of news, Preston is going to be staying with us for a while."

"Why? Shouldn't he just hang out with one of his guy friends? Or just stay in his apartment. This is just a dumb trick to get him to sleep with you."

I heard footsteps outside the door suddenly stop as Clara rambles on. It's Preston, but he makes the smart decision to not come in yet.

"Preston's not like that Clara. A fire started in his microwave and the firemen refuse to let him go back into his apartment. I was just offering a place to stay for a friend."

"Alright, sure" Clara ruffs. Preston creaks open the door with a duffel bag of clothing.

"Hey Preston!" I try to sound cheery, so that Clara won't explode. "You can put your stuff over there. I hope you don't mind sleeping on the couch."

"No problem." He says smoothly. We are both acting for Clara's sake, and he knew it.

"Guess what? Clara just got accepted into college!"

"Really? That's amazing. Congrats, Clara. Where are you going to?"

She perked up, "Univeristy of Texas. Apparently I'm so talented that they are taking me in this term."

"Neat. What major?"

"I'm majoring in Health Studies."

Preston tried not to laugh, "Wow! Cool. You're probably going to be in debt for the rest life, right?"

"Nah, my great uncle died or something and his will gave my family all the money." She smirked. "Some of it goes to the college and the rest is for Laura over here."

My face got a little hot; she didn't have to say that. Preston, again, noticed but said nothing. I decided to chime in.

"Wait, when are you leaving, Clara?"

Clara's face turned dark and her eyes shifted, "Tomorrow. They said it was important that I leave as quickly as possible."

What? She's leaving so soon. I couldn't believe my greatest friend was just going to hop on a train and leave me here. And with Preston living in our apartment? You would think she freak over that, but she's doesn't care. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Oh well, my mind rings, This is what Clara wants to do with her life, you should be happy for her. So I smile, make a joke about packing up after just moving in, and walk out of the room. Flopping on my bed, I try to relax and just not think about the whole thing. I hear someone's footsteps, but I just want to be left alone. Hours seem to pass before I fall asleep.

Clara's POV

As Laura walks out of the room, her news from earlier pops into my mind. I look at Preston with rage, and he immediately starts backing away like a cowering dog.

"I swear if you ever touch her or look at her the wrong way, I will break you. Don't you ever hurt her, you understand me? Cause when you do... you are going to wish you were never born."

He's speechless. That coward. So dare he come into our apartment and just expect Laura to just take him in (the fact that she is did is beyond me). He's totally trying to get in her pants, and she's too busy hiding from the Child Services to tell him her actual age. I shouldn't leave, I really shouldn't. Laura has always been like my little sister, I should protect her. But it's too late. I already signed the paperwork and started packing. Preston's shaking voice cuts through my worries,

"You should...uh... go pack. It might calm you down."

"Don't tell me to call down you pig!"

And with that, I storm off to my room. The breathing behind Laura's door is heavy, meaning she is probably asleep and can't hear anything Or she might be crying. I shake my head quickly. Laura is 17, not 5, and I shouldn't be babying her anymore. She's my friend and deserves much more respect than that. Deciding to leave her be, I go and pack the rest of my stuff.
