Atelophobia

(n.) The fear of imperfection. The fear of never being good enough.

My mom sat down on a chair at the kitchen island waiting for me and the monster, Cole to come inside. I can't freaking believe that I told my mom that Cole is my friend when he's actually a random guy I've never met before that broke into my house, threatened me with a knife to take care of his wound and left blood all over the freaking place.

Mom would've freaked out if I told her that.

But I couldn't turn it back around now, can I? I placed the bag with the remaining products I bought on the kitchen island and sat on a stool, Cole did the exact same. He decided to sit right next to me when there were at least four other stools left. I shrugged, trying to get comfortable with his presence, but my body wouldn't work with me.

Mom placed her phone down, and finished chewing on one of the pieces of chicken I made today. They were really good, may I add.

"So how do you guys know each other and why were you both outside this late." She said taking her hair out of it's tight bun letting her long black locks free.

The words got stuck in my throat and I felt Cole's eyes burn into the side of my head and I shuddered.

"Uhm, Um. We bumped into each other at the seven-eleven." I said after a lot of stuttering and my mother's eyes narrowed slightly. "You do love to visit that store for it's slurpee's," She said and I let out a low breath I didn't know I was keeping in.

I dared to look at Cole briefly and he had a blank face, I thought he would look relieved that I didn't rat on him, but I guess he knows how to put up a façade.

"Okay, so why were the two of you out at twelve a.m?" She asked and consumed the whole glass of water. "She was craving some slurpee's so we got them." Cole said simply with no emotion noticeable in his voice. My mom had a knowing look on her face and looked back and forth between the both of us.

"You two a couple?" She asked and I furiously shook my head, much to my mother's disappointment. I haven't been exactly popular with the guys. I've had a boyfriend or two, but nothing too serious.

"No, no not at all, mom. We're just um, acquaintances." I said and folded my hands onto my lap and looked at my seven-eleven bag infront of me.

"Okay then, so.. what's your name?" She asked and Cole chuckled. "Cole, Cole Blayke. Ma'am." He said politely and I looked up at Cole, stunned. I never expected that.

"Cole, nice to meet. You aren't from around here, are you?" She asked and finished the last pieces of chicken. "No I'm not, I live in the Daegal, the town four towns away from here." He said my eyes widened slightly. Daegal is one of the rich towns here in Holback. Unlike Lindow, the average town we live in.

I totally did not expect him to be from there, I mean, look at him. He street fights when he obviously already has enough money to be able to live without it, he breaks into people's houses and threatens them with knives and make them stitch his wounds with the freaking size of a refrigerator. But then again, you know what they say about the most rich people, heartless and fake.

I shook my head in disbelief and picked at my nails, listening to my mom and Cole talk.

"Oh that's nice, haven't been there since- since a while." Mom said and my head shot up to face her, giving her a small glare. She's not gonna tell Cole about our personal life, none of his goddamn business.

She looked at me with a small frown and stood up.

"So Cole, what are you doing all the way here in Lindow? Aren't your parents waiting for you?" She asks placing the dishes in the sink. I looked and saw him looking at mom's hands, following every move she made.
