Niall POV:

I was sitting on the cold forest ground crying my eyes out, the blood red tears staining my hands and face. I knew that I must have looked like an absolute wreck, but right now I could care less. He chose that stupid mortal over me! Even after he promised that he would try to love me back. Unsurprisingly he didn’t live up to his promise, I never expected him to in the first place but a guy can dream right?

Suddenly I heard rustling in the bushes ahead of me. I moved my head up but didn’t really bother to protect myself, there was no point I was too weak to fight anyways, I couldn’t even smell the attacker, let alone defend myself against him.

Slowly a large black wolf emerged from the bushes; he was way too large to be a normal wolf. He must be a werewolf, and I was probably on his territory and now he was going to slaughter me. My eyes widened in fear and my breathing began to pick up more.  Even though I was feeling immense fear I couldn’t help but noticed how his black fur shined against the moonlight and how his bright yellow eyes were so full of light and happiness they resembled the sun itself.

He lowered his head to me and a feeling of relief washed through my body, okay so he wasn’t going to kill me….yet.  Carefully and slowly he began to walk towards me. Once he was close enough I reached my hand out and pet his muzzle.

As soon as I touched him a strange feeling washed over my body. I don’t know what the feeling was all I know is that it made me happier then I was a few moments ago and made the tears stop falling down my face. All the fear that I had before seemed to vanish from my heart.  I smiled slightly and pet his whole head, which might I add was huge.

“Hello.” He told me through a mind link.

His voice was deep and smooth, it was better than any song I had ever heard and more relaxing then anything I had ever experienced. I felt this unexplainable attraction to him, like I never wanted to be without him.

“Hi.” I said quietly.

A wolfish grin spread across his face when he heard me speak, and his smile made me smile.

“What’s your name?” he asked.

“Niall.”  I told him, my voice louder than before.

“Niall what a beautiful name.” He mused, staring at me like I was a fine piece of art.

His words along with his staring made me blush like a bright red tomato.

“What’s your name?” I questioned.

“Josh Devine, leader of the werewolves.”

My eyes widened in shock and I pulled my hand away from his head. I have heard many stories about Josh and how he had slaughtered his own children. I didn’t know if they were true, but the storied still scared the shit out of me.

He frowned at me and placed his head in my lap, which was almost too small to fit his whole head. It was strange how nice and close he was being to me. Almost too strange.

I mean when werewolves find anyone on their land they would usually rip them to shreds, but he was acting like I was some sort of long lost lover instead of an enemy.

“What’s wrong?” He asked.

“Why are you being so… cozy with me?” I questioned.

“You are my mate and I love you.” He confessed.

Mate?! But that’s…. that can’t be possible. Mates are someone that werewolves spend the rest of their lives with, someone who is perfect for them in every way and completes their soul. That can’t be me! Nobody loves me.

“W-what?! That’s impossible!” I exclaimed.

He whined more and pressed his head further into my chest, trying to calm me down.

“No its not, you are my mate.” He argued his voice calm.

“How?” I whispered.

“Fate, destiny, gods. It does not matter how, you are my mate.”

“Are you sure?” I asked.

Josh nodded his large head and gave me a slobbery lick on the cheek. “Positive.”

I sighed and looked at Josh, he looked like he was being completely honest, and maybe somebody could love me? It’s not impossible right? I deserve happiness and if Josh is what brings me happiness then I am going to try this whole mate thing out.

“Well then… take me to your pack.” I said.

He smiled and stood up on all fours, bending down so I could get on his back. I bit my lip and carefully and nervously positioned myself on his back, clutching onto his soft fur as he ran off towards his pack.

We stopped in front of a cave on the side of the mountains about thirty minutes later. The cave entrance did not look very large but once we got inside I could tell that the place was massive.

There were many werewolves just in the front entrance; some were in human form and others in their wolf forms. All of them bowed to Josh as he walked by and I felt very self-conscious as they stared at me with both wonder and disbelief.

Josh stopped in front of a hole in the wall; dear hide was used as some type of door. He entered the room and it was huge, fit for a king… which I guess he kind of was. He bent down again and I jumped off of his back, stretching out my legs.

He changed back into his human form and put some shorts on. I looked him over and saw that he was just as beautiful in human form as he was in wolf form.

“Hi.” He breathed, walking towards me and holding me in a tight embrace.

I didn’t know what to do for a while but eventually hugged him back, putting my head in the crook of his neck.

“You do not know how long I have waited to find you.” He smiled, holding me tighter.

I pulled back and looked at him.

“How long? Two, five years?” I asked, he didn’t look like he could be any older than 25.

“Over two thousand years.” He told me, a serious expression on his face.

“T-two thousand years?!” He exclaimed, looking at him in shock. “How are you alive that long?”

“I will explain everything later my love, for no can I just enjoy the fact that I have you in my arms after all this time?” He asked.

I bit my lip and nodded looking up at him with a small smile. “Okay, I need a good cuddle anyway.” I chuckled.

He smiled and grabbed my hand pulling me to the bed made out of oak and bear hides as blankets. Josh lied down on the bed, pulling me with him. He grabbed the blanket and threw it over us.

A smile found its way on my lips and I wrapped my arms around his waist.

“I don’t know why I trust you so much… but I do.” I whispered.

“It’s because we’re mates.” He told me.

“I know, and I’m still confused about the whole mate thing.”

“I will tell you everything later, for now let’s just enjoy our time together, I have a feeling that things will not be calm for much longer.” He murmured, burying his head into my neck.

Something inside of me told me that he was right. A storms coming and we are right in the middle of it.
