I heard an annoying beeping sound.
Before I opened my eyes, the smell was the first thing I noticed.
Was I in a hospital?
I groaned, getting out of the bed. The walls and bed were a pristine white. A nurse entered and I swore she looked familiar.
"You need to lie back down. Your family will be here soon, Bree." She said. Wait...aren't I Elise?
"...Isn't my name Elise?" I croaked weakly.
"No..." The nurse replied, her face showing signs of confusion.
"Don't I have a sister named Elise?"
"...No. You're an only child, Bree. Don't you remember? Your twin died in the womb." The nurse then left the room. This left me to wonder.
I got out of bed. I was certain I was fine. Exiting my room and entering what seemed to be the third floor lobby, I saw two people come out of the elevator.
"Leslie. You're supposed to stay here." The woman said, crossing her arms. She had a shorter hairstyle, and she seemed to be around thirty years old.
"No. Wanna go w-with you." The boy she had brought back to floor three said. He had white hair and a stutter. I assumed his name was Leslie. They walked into a room near the elevator and closed the door.
As I passed a couple rooms, I stopped at one. Inside it was a middle-aged man talking to another man with glasses who was in a hospital bed.
"Nice going, Joseph. You're good at falling." The middle-aged man said, chuckling.
"It's not my fault that building was rotting out." The glasses-man replied angrily. "Go get me some coffee, Sebastian. I need some. Really bad."
"Just like I need smokes?" Sebastian joked.
"Just like you need cancer, yeah. I prefer things that don't give away free cancer. Like coffee." Joseph retorted. The man named Sebastian reluctantly walked out the door. All of these people seemed familiar to me in some way.
I continued walking through rooms until I came to a room where someone with bandages around their face lay, quietly. Curiosity got the better of me. Despite the fact I knew I was doing wrong, I began to unwrap the bandages. As the bandages thinned out, I began to see burn marks and scars and the fact that this person was obviously burned.
I picked up the clipboard with the reason for admittance. Laura? Where have I heard that name before? I shook off the nostalgia and turned away from what seemed to be a girl. I scanned the papers.
Laura is in a vegetative state. Not dead, but not living, either. She's as good as dead and there is no chance she will be removed from this vegetative state because half of her brain was melted in the fire. She can still perceive sounds around her, but nothing else. She cannot respond and she has no sight. Parts of her are falling off and the doctors doubt they can keep her together long enough to wait for the technology needed to fix her.
As I turned around to put the clipboard back on the bed, I was face to face with the burnt girl.
"Give him back." She screamed. "He's mine. Give him back!" She lunged at me, and I ran out of the room. I bumped into the man named Sebastian.
"Help me!" I cried, but he paid no attention. Even when Laura threw things, nobody could see her or me. I entered my own room, locking it. Laura began to pound on the door. I collapsed, sobbing on the pristine white floor. As I cried, with each tear, I began to remember.
Leslie.
Joseph.
Sebastian.
Laura.
The bullet.
And finally... Ruvik.
The nurse was here, too.
And the woman I didn't know had to be Kiddman.
I've seen everyone. Everyone except Ruvik.
Where did Ruvik go?
I unlocked the door, opening it and coming face to face with what seemed to be a melting Laura. She was falling apart.
"He belongs to me!" She moaned, reaching out towards me. "Stay away...!"
I pushed past her, looking through all of the rooms in a panic.
"He'll never love you in the way he loved me."
I continued to run around frantically.
"You're not me. You'll never be loved like I was."
"Good." I stopped in front of Laura. "I don't wanna be loved like you were. I want to be loved for who I am, not who you are. If he doesn't love me like he loves you, then I'm being loved like he loves me. I wanna be loved for my own traits, not yours."
A ding resounded.
It was for the elevator. As Laura crumbled to pieces, the elevator opened and Ruvik stepped out.
"Elise...Elise, come on...!"
His voice was the only kind of music I needed. My eyes fluttered open and I saw him.
"Ru...vik..." My throat was sore as hell.
"I took out the bullet and cleaned the wound. You'll be okay, Elise." He wrapped his arms around me. "You're going to be fine."
That was the best news I've had in my entire life.
