"I'm glad you're alright. I about had a heart attack!" My mother bellows from the kitchen where she is making macaroni at the stove.
"I'm fine mom. I was just at Chester's."
"I know I know. But with the alarm not on and the front door unlocked this morning.." She trails.
"I'm sure you just forgot to turn the alarm on and lock the door." I say casually from my spot at the kitchen table.
"I guess so. But I swear I did." She stops stirring the macaroni and stares at the wall in thought before she shakes her head and goes back to cooking. "Hm. I'm must be more tired then I thought."
I let out a sigh of relief.
I don't know how we got away with it, but we did. Thank god we did.
After mailing my letter to April, I anxiously knocked on my front door and prayed that my mom wouldn't suspect anything about me being at Chester's so late.
After about a minute, a very worried mom swung the door open quickly, Her blonde hair in a mess on her head, small pieces framing her face. Her body visibly relaxed once her eyes met mine.
I got through dinner successfully and tried my best to breeze through questions about school.
"Thanks for dinner mom. I'm gonna go take a shower and head to bed. Love you!" I say in a slight rush as I jog up the stairs. Even though I can't see my mothers face, I somehow know she is beyond confused.
I head into the bathroom across the hall from my room and strip from the same clothes I've been wearing since last night. My mother questioned my attire just like Maryann had done mere hours before. I brushed it off by saying I came home and changed before going back to Chester's.
I test my hand in the steaming water before letting it cascade over my body. I turn the nob to make the water hotter in hopes of getting rid of some of the stress clouding my head.
How do you get rid of stress without knowing the cause of the discomfort?
I huff in frustration when all the water seems to do is suffocate me in steam.
I turn the the nob the opposite direction, making ice cold water pour from the shower head. I wash my body and hair and finally shut the water off all together.
"So much for a relaxing shower." I mumble aloud, shivering as I wrap a towel around my body.
I make my way to my room and pull a over sized shirt over my head along with a sports bra and panties before climbing into bed and grabbing my weird, old phone from the night stand.
I ruffle my wet hair as I wait for the ringing to stop.
"Hello?" Chester's voice sounds through the line.
"Oh my gosh we did it." I sigh into the receiver.
"She bought it?" Chester whispers.
"Yep." I say happily. "Who would've thought I would ever skip school with Chester Winfield ." I laugh.
Chester's laughs are blocked from my hearing as I look up to my door frame.
There my mother stands, a deep scowl set on her face.
I quickly hang up the phone and search my mind for a excuse I could use, but find nothing.
"Skipping school?" My mother angrily questions as she walks toward my bed.
"Uhh." I hum still trying to think of at least something I can say.
"You know what." My mom sighs. "It's 9 at night and I'm not going to argue with you. I'll be calling Chester's parents in the morning. As for you, grounded for a week. And Chester will not be coming over in the mornings anymore."
