"Les." A voice calls quietly into my ear. "We have to leave, the nurse needs to give April her medicine."
My eyes snap open to meet Chester's. His face is a warm red, fresh from sleep, his hair a wild mess above his head.
I nod and slowly stand from my sorry excuse of a sleeping spot. My lower back is sore from the bone marrow test, along with my shoulders and neck, due to my recent sleeping arrangements.
I peer around the room as I stretch my arms above my head. Sam is lazily rubbing her eyes as she makes her way out of the room. She gives a small smile to me while doing so. April is still sound asleep, and as peaceful as she looks, I feel bad for the nurse who hast to wake her up. The same nurse from my bone marrow test, begins to do just that. Her brows are creased and, oddly enough, she looks slightly distraught about waking April up. She looks towards us, a small frown sat on her face.
"I'll inform you guys when she's done taking her medicine." She nods, dismissing us politely.
Chester nods back before grabbing my hand, attempting to pull me out of the room, but I don't give it up that easy. Why do we have to leave?
"Can't we just stay?" I ask, not bothering to hide the edge in my voice caused by my curiosity.
"Lesley." Chester whispers in warning at my clipped tone.
But I don't care. Yes, I'm trying to be a bit of a nicer and accepting person, but that doesn't take away from my evident sass. I don't think anything could take that away. It's just apart of my personality, I suppose.
The nurse sighs before crossing her arms over her chest.
"April is in a very vulnerable state. Her mind is still very reluctant in believing that all of this actually happened to her. She's a young girl with a very rare disease. She's not wrong in thinking, "Why me?" I'm sure anyone would. Understand?"
I blinked in confusion. I understand, but what does this have to do with anything?
"Your point?" I push. "That doesn't mean I can't be here while she gets her medicine."
"That's not what I'm concerned about. It's waking her up that's the problem..."
What?
"What do you mean?" The nurse purses her lips before looking toward the ground, still not fully telling me the issue here.
My irritation only grew when she told us once again that we could come right back in a few. I tare my hand from Chester's and ball both my hands into fist at my sides.
"What is the problem here? I'm not leaving her side!" I practically growl, much louder than I intended to.
The nurse opens her mouth to speak before a soft stir sounds from in between us.
April.
Thank God, now she can finally tell this nurse to piss off.
The nurse gasps as April rolls her head to her sides, still waking up. Her eyes peel open and she immediately shoots straight up in the hospital bed. She gasp as she looks around.
My face twist into confusion as I watch April.
"April?" I whisper. "Are you alright?"
