My last two classes with Chester are at the end of the day after lunch and I'm glad. I honestly didn't know what to say to him. But I'm not apologizing. I didn't do anything wrong. I have every right to get offended when I thought he was going to comfort me and ended up judging me.
Suddenly, my anger for Chester returns and I find myself rolling my eyes as I walk into the lunch room.
My eyes scan the room and finally connect with a pare of grass green ones. Chester's eyes fall to his hands and he shifts uncomfortably in his seat at a empty table. I guess none of his friends, expect me of course, are in his new lunch period.
I sigh aloud as I realize there's no where else I can, or want, to sit. My feet carry me towards Chester, but a deep husky voice carries me the opposite direction.
"Hey Lesley!" Mitch, a acquaintance from freshman year, exclaims cheerfully.
I turn around slightly and give a small wave with a bright smile.
"Wanna sit with us?" He ask while pulling out a seat next to him. He fluffs his blonde hair and flashes a sideways smile that meets his wide blue eyes.
I smile and give a small "yeah." I glance around the circle table and see Violet, one of April's many close friends from last year, Emilio , Mitch's best friend, and finally Shelly, also a acquaintance. I've not spoken more than ten words to anyone at this table expect Mitch, but only because me and Mitch were paired up last year in science.
I want to ask Mitch, "Where were you Monday when I was sitting alone?" But I don't.
Instead, I sit down next to Mitch and cringe when I notice I have a direct line of vision to Chester two tables down. I smile anyways and take out my lunch. Violet and Shelly seem to be in there own world of a conversation, so I turn to Mitch and give another bright smile.
"Do we have any classes together this year?" I ask Mitch in my best attempt at starting a conversation.
"I think Heath... Last period right?"
"Yeah. I wish we had science together again though, last year was hilarious." I laugh lightly.
"What happen last year?" Emilio wiggles his dark eyebrows at Mitch, who punches him in the arm and takes a bite of the green apple in his hand. A smirk covers Emilio's maple colored skin and he nudges for Mitch to continue.
"We were partners in science." Mitch and I both say in union.
Mitch glances sideways at me as we both chuckle.
"Remember when you started that fire!" Mitch bubbles out a adorable laugh.
"Oh don't go there! We both know you were the one who started that!" I pronounce with a giggle.
"Well you practically shoved me to get out of the room from the sight of a small flame." He argues back, jokingly.
I knock my shoulders against his as we both laugh uncontrollably. Wow. I haven't genuinely laughed this hard in awhile. I continue to laugh so hard that my peanut butter and jelly sandwich nudges my nose, leaving a dab of jelly in its way. Just as Mitch's finger touches the tip of my nose in a small gesture to get the purple glob off, a loud slam makes Mitch freeze in place, and makes me jump two feet from my seat. I recover quickly and look towards the source of the noise.
My eyes meet Chester and I scan his body. His eyes are blood shot with anger and his chest puffs in and out with every breath he takes. His tray is a mess all over the empty table he was sitting at, but is now standing at.
All the heads In the cafeteria are faced toward Chester, but Chester barely notices. His green orbs are focused on me and only me. Finally, he lifts his eyes and glances around the cafeteria. Realization and humiliation seem to hit him like a truck. He unclasp his fisted hands and runs his fingers through his hair as he rushes out of scene and into the bathroom.
