I shoved all my washing into the top drawer of my dresser and slammed the draw shut, causing everything to rattle in my room.
It had been three weeks since Luke and I had decided to call off whatever it was that was on and I hadn't even seen him, nevermind spoken to him. It was clear that I was slowly moving though the stages of grief and I was currently on anger.
With just as much force as I had shut the drawer I threw my curtains open and was met with the sight of a clear autumn morning....and boxes littering next doors drive. My heart clenched and I rested my elbows on the windowsill as I watched Jack pack up his car.
He stopped and stretched noticing me stood at my window. He waved and smiled causing me to offer him a small wave back. His wave turned into a beckoning and he stood trying to convince me to come done while I shook my head at him. He mouthed 'please' and I sighed.
If he was moving it was only right to say good bye.
When I had made it down to him he was packing another box away and looked over his shoulder to me. "Alright?" I didn't respond but I walked over and held the car door open for him. "Haven't seen you for a while."
"Me and Luke are't exactly on good terms." He straightened up and took the door from me, slamming it shut. Neither of us said anything but he looked past me and smiled, causing me to turn around. I was met with the sight of Luke, stood in the doorway with his hands stuffed awkwardly in his pockets. Seeing him again after all this time in no way lessened my feelings for him. My heart still stopped for a moment and my stomach felt as though it was doing back flips.
He looked down as he spoke to me, "Hi..."
"Hey."
Behind me Jack kept packing up his car, trying to pretend he wasn't there. "I er...I..." Luke fumbled for a second then stepped outside. "I came to help Jack pack up his stuff." I nodded and stepped back so he could load up the boxes. As he bent over to pick up a box, I noticed his shoulders and the muscles that tensed under the weight of the load. It made my heart stutter for a second.
Within a couple of minutes everything was packed and Jack looked nostalgically over the house he had grown up in. "I'm going to miss this so much."
I watched as a scene of brotherly affection unfolded in front of me. Jack reached out for Luke and pulled him down, trapping him in a head lock and ruffling his already messy hair. "And you, I'm going to miss you, and when I come back for a visit I want to hear that you two have sorted things out." He released Luke from his grip and pointed between us which caused both of us to blush and look down to the floor. "Understand me Lukey boy?"" Luke nodded and Jack pulled him in for a hug. They whispered between them before pulling away and Jack stepped towards me. He held his hand out for a handshake and I nearly took it but he laughed and wrapped me in a tight bear hug. "I'm going to miss you too and I sorry for putting my foot in it."
"It's okay, it wasn't your fault."
He pulled away and walked inside the house leaving Luke and I alone. I looked over to him and caught his eye. "How are you Luke?" He shrugged his shoulders and chuckled a little, "Not great to be honest with you Maya, not great."
"I miss you."
My words made my heart clench even more because saying them made everything real. Saying them meant we were really apart and not Luke and Maya anymore.
"I miss you too."
Jack reappeared with Liz and walked over to his car. They hugged before he climbed in and rolled down his window, waving as he drove away.
And just like that there was another empty slot in my life. Another space that couldn't be filled and another destruction I had caused.
Jack had to leave because of me.
Liz hurried inside, tears dripping down her cheeks, leaving Luke and I alone again. I turned to face him and watched as he stared into the distance after Jack's car. "Are you going to miss him?" He shrugged. "Suppose, at least the only person eating my cereal will be me." I smiled, for the first time in three weeks and he turned to face me, a small smile playing on his lips too.
"God I've missed you Hemmings." And with that I had to fight off the overwhelming urge to run at him and throw my arms around him, peppering kisses all over his face.
