Chapter 7
When I woke up, I felt like I had a hangover.
My head felt like it's been crushed by a pile of bricks and the pain in my ankle that have subsided now was replaced with numbness. Katie was asleep next to me, her head placed on the side of my bed.
I looked around and realized I was in the clinic, with me and Katie on here. I remembered being in the toolshed, locked to death by those hags, then the next thing I knew, there was Len, helping me up, then I blacked out.
I blushed, thinking of how he lifted me in front of those people while looking almost knocked out. That must've been social suicide to him, since Len was never known to lift unconscious people like me. I bet Lyndsey's already found out, and this might become a little bit harder.
There was a knock on the door, and a classmate of mine came in. She looked nervous though, as if someone's watching her closely.
"Hey, how's your foot?" she asked. Wait, how did she know it was my foot?
I smiled, faking my little doubt. "Oh, it's fine, thanks. But, um, what were you doing here?"
She looked around, pretending to absorbed by the ceiling. "Er...um...Len told me to check on you. Anyway he'll be coming once I told him. Bye!" She waved and hurriedly got out of the room. Oh boy, this is really embarassing. I don't know how I'll handle the gossips about this. With Len..really.
A couple of minutes later, Len came in, expressionless as usual. He sat on one of the plastic chairs next to my bed. He was observing my ankle for any damage. I could feel heat burning to my cheeks. This is a really creepy situation.
I sighed and smiled a little at him. "Hey. Thanks for helping me back then. I would've been in more trouble if you didn't come."
He nodded. "I didn't take you for the damsel-in-distress type. I didn't think you would hurt and lock yourself in there either. Who did this to you," he said seriously.
I want to cry. Which is a miracle, because I'm never the crying type. Well, except when I'm desperate to live. But all I can feel was anger and irritation at Angie and Tiffany. Geez. What a pathetic tactic.
Instead I didn't tell him. "No, it's fine. It might have been by accident, besides, I tripped and fell. Don't worry about it." I looked at Katie, who hadn't even stirred at our quiet conversation. Deep sleeper, huh.
He shook his head. "Hazel, I think we know that whoever they are, they're not going to leave it just like that. Besides, I'm not going to do anything. I'm just going to keep a watch over you." He called me by my first name, not milady or something. Then I realized what he just said. What was I expecting? I'm so stupid. This isn't some TV drama where he'll beat the bad guys for me. He won't do a thoughtless move. He just wanted to make his job easier. Damn, I can dream.
I sighed, a sign of defeat. "Okay, let's say that I have this hunch that Angie and Tiffany were the ones who did this."
He looked confused. "So you crossed them?"
"Yes, that's because they were ganging up on Katie," I said, gesturing to the sleeping Katie. "And I kinda insulted them."
He scratched his head. "Well, whatever you said, what they did was too much. Girls can be mean sometimes."
Is he really dense, or did he not see Lyndsey's daily harassments to other people because of him? I shrugged, and fiddled with my hand. But when I looked up I saw Len holding out his hand to me.
"Do you want to go now, or do you still want to rest?" he asked gently.
I shook my head. "I'm fine now."
"Can you walk?"
I extended my foot, and tried to stand up, but I felt pain and I flinched. I automatically sat back down and shook my head.
"Then I'll carry you," he said, carrying me off my feet. I struggled a little bit, trying to get down to the ground, but his strong arms held me. I can practically feel muscle underneath his clothes, which made me blush uncontrollably.
"Put me down! I think I work better on the ground!" I exclaimed. Katie stirred a little, but didn't woke up.
He grinned, flashing white teeth. "Well, you have to go anyway, and you can't walk properly."
"Where are we going?"
"Home," he said, smiling. He tightened his arms around me, and was forced to lean on his chest. I could feel his heartbeat. Isn't this the same situation before? Except I was much, much more conscious of him.
"Okay," I surrendered, leaning slightly to him. Careful not wake up Katie, he silently carried me outside to where everyone was watching. I thought I would feel ashamed I was with him. Everyone stared at me like I was an alien, and that we are the strangest combination. I thought I would want to die right now, but I was more aware of Len's breathing and his arms around me more than anyone else. And I thought I would rather be invisible than be seen like this.
But all I could feel was the warmth growing in my heart.
