I couldn't move. I couldn't speak. I couldn't even process what was going on.
"Shadow? Are you alright?" Her voice sent shivers down my spine. I never thought I would hear it again... Fifty years....more than fifty years...right? I didn't understand. I felt empty. I shook my head and laughed slightly.
"I must be dreaming." I muttered. Maria put a hand on my shoulder, her face concerned.
"Why do you say that?" She wondered. I looked her in the eyes, hardening my soul.
"Because you're dead." I stated bluntly. Maria blinked and furrowed her eyebrows, seeming slightly hurt.
"Shadow..." She began. I shook my head and pushed her hand away from me. I got to my feet and made my way to the door.
"This is a dream because you were killed when G.U.N. attacked us, all of the experiments were destroyed, the ARK was abandoned, the professor was imprisoned, and I was locked in stasis for fifty years!" I snapped. Maria began to walk towards me.
"Shadow, everything's alright. I'm alive, G.U.N. is on our side, everybody's still here, the Space Colony is fine, Grandfather is still in the lab making sure everything in your creation went according to plan, and you haven't even been alive for more than seventy-two hours, let alone fifty years." She assured me. Seventy-two...hours?
"But..." I trailed off, at a loss for words. This was a dream...it had to be! "What about Dr. Eggman, and Sonic, and Silver, and Mephiles? What about Rouge, and Carly, and Virus? What about every damned thing that has happened to me?!" I snarled. I wasn't really looking for an answer, but it seemed Maria had one.
"It was all just a bad dream, Shadow. A nightmare. You've been thrashing about all night. Grandpa said that your first few nights were going to be hard ones, because your mind can't comprehend that you were just... created at age fifteen and you'll never grow, so it's trying to make up it's own past." She explained. I began shaking. No...this wasn't true. This right here, right now, was the nightmare. A nightmare wrapped in beautiful fulfillment, my deepest wishes and desires come true. This was what I always wanted, for everything to have been a dream and to wake up one day on the ARK with Maria again. So, why did I feel so...tortured? I spun on my heel and ran out the door as fast as I could, racing down the hallways I knew way too well to have only been here seventy-two hours. I ran and ran for hours on end, and I didn't stop until I was so tired that I collapsed where I stood...
Mephiles smirked as he watched Shadow struggle, looking through the Chaos Emeralds. It had been all too easy to gather them and do what he had been planning...all he had left to do was start the second stage of his plan.
"Soon..." He told himself. "I must wait until everything is perfect, so as to cause the most pain." Mephiles grinned evilly. "The nightmare...the promise...the sacrifice...vengeance will be mine..."
A/N: Sorry for the short chapter, guys. I'm not sure if I'm going to write very much of this. It might be a short story, or it might not. I haven't decided. Anyway.... Yeah!
