Something was off when I woke up the next morning. Other than the fact that it was nearly one in the afternoon, it was too quiet. Usually by this time back home, Logan and Bridget would be up and yelling. It’s happened a lot at sleepovers.
I got dressed quickly and made my way downstairs. Bridget and Nathan were sitting in the kitchen. Nathan had his head in his hands and was shaking slightly. Bridget had a hand placed on his shoulder and she was talking to him.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
Nathan looked up. His eyes were red and puffy. “It’s all my fault.”
“What happened?” I rephrased my question.
“Logan left this morning. She went to LA. She said all she was doing was causing trouble for us.”
“Nathan, it’s not your fault,” Bridget said.
I looked at both of them. “But it is. If he hadn’t slapped her, she would still be here. Logan would be here and we would make a mess trying to make breakfast like we always do.”
“I am so sorry, Shannon,” he whispered. “If I could take everything back, I would.”
I just stared. “Sorry isn’t going to cut it this time.”
I pulled on my shoes and walked out the front door. I have no idea where I am going, since I don’t know London, but I needed to get out of that house and just think. There was way too much tension in that house.
I heard footsteps behind me and I looked back to see Max followed after me. I slowed my pace, waiting for him to catch up. When he did, he was out of breath.
“You should work out more,” I told him.
“I’ll…get…right on…that,” he breathed.
I started walking again and didn’t care that Max was with me. Sure, I was mad at him for calling Logan stupid, but how could I stay mad at him? He was Max! Nobody can stay mad at him.
“Shannon?” he asked.
I looked at him. “Yeah?”
Max looked awkward. “I was wondering if we could still have our date.”
I thought about it. I really did like Max, and I wanted to get to know him better. And it wouldn’t be fair to him if I said no. Overall he was a really nice guy.
“I would love to,” I smiled.
“Cool. How about for our date, I give you a tour of London?”
My smile got bigger. “That sounds amazing.”
Max took my hand in his and led me down the street.
“Where to first?” I asked him.
“Well, tell me the five things you have always wanted to see?” Max asked me in reply.
I thought about it. “Um…The Tower of London…Buckingham Palace…um, St. Paul’s Cathedral…The O2 Arena, and of course The London Eye.”
“Well then, off to The Tower of London!”
I giggled at how excited he was and followed after him. I was glad I decided to wear flats. If I had worn heels, my feet would definitely already be killing me.
The Tower of London is even more impressive in person. It made Max chuckle at how little I knew about British history. He told me that the Tower of London was a Royal Palace, a fortress, a prison, and place of execution, an arsenal, a Royal Mint, a Royal Zoo, and a jewel house.
