Everything was great at the homestead for a few weeks after that. Martha was back to her old self. Abby wasn't seen again, and Rosie was as lazy as ever. Cappy couldn't have been more happy.
Dr. Mundy even finally found a specialist to take a look at Parson. He was arriving the following week from New York.
Cappy's happy days ended when he came home one night to find two uniformed police officers on his front porch, one of them Alfred Park.
“What are you two bozos doing here?” Cappy asked.
Park smirked at him, as the other officer said, “We were called here by your wife.”
“Yeah? What for?”
“It seems your two pets caused a disturbance.”
“Yeah? How so?”
“Well, we had to put your bear down, and...”
“What? Who gave you two shit heads the right to kill my bear?”
“The City of Calgary Mr. Hook. Your bear was going on a rampage. We just saved your little wife's life.”
Cappy stared at the police officer in disbelief, not saying a word until the silence had become uncomfortable.
“Uh, well it seems your monkey that escaped came back. First it attacked your wife, bruising her a little bit before she escaped up to the attic, pulling up the ladder and closing the door on it. After it went back outside and started taunting your bear, throwing stones at it, and yelling. Mrs. Hook could see and hear it from the attic window.
Somehow the monkey got the cage door open, Mrs. Hook said there was a key by the door. That must be one clever monkey. Anyway the bear charged out enraged. Mrs. Hook had called us by the point.
By the time we got there, the bear was going crazy, tearing up the garden. We had to shoot it multiple times to put it down. We found Mrs. Hook in the attic, terrified, and no sign of the monkey.”
“You've got to be kidding me. Where's Martha?”
“Inside Mr. Hook.”
Cappy knocked the two out of the way, and went inside. Martha was in the living room, and when she saw him come in, ran to him.
“Oh Jim, it was so horrible. That crazy monkey, he tried to kill me.” she said.
“That monkey must be mad with fever. We're going to have to go to the doctor and make sure you are alright.”
“Oh really Jim, I'm OK.”
“No no no Martha. What if you caught whatever Randy has? Maybe they could treat it before you become as bad as him. Those two idiots out there also said you had bruises from where Abby attacked you.”
“It's just a few minor bruises, and if I am sick with whatever Randy has, what can they really do if they don't know what it is?”
“That won't be for long Martha. Doc Mundy says a specialist is coming in from New York to look at Randy.”
“What? He is? Since when?”
“The doctor told me a few days ago.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Well I didn't think...”
“I'm going up stairs to rest Jim. I feel a little faint, from all that happened.”
“OK. I'll call Mundy to see if he can make a house call.”
Martha ignored or didn't hear Cappy, and went upstairs to lie in bed.
