She would never admit it, but the only reason she started was because she could taste her with every breathe. It took her years to find the right brand. The one that lingered on her tongue like all of thier stolen kisses.
Alex had hated it when Tobin smoked. She couldn't stand the way it tasted when they kissed, or how dumb Tobin looked with a cigarette hanging between her fingers. Now it was all she had.
Sitting on her porch she let the cold air fill her lungs and let the smoke warm her bones. Her girlfriend would tell you she had a way of collecting light. And it was undeniable as she threw her head back, eyes closed, going some where no one could find her.
"Babe" the smoke rising from her lips. "can you go get me another pack please? " There was the sound of keys leaving the table and her girlfriend was out the door with promises not to be long.
As the car backed out of the drive Alex smothered her cigarette, picked up her phone, and dialed.
"Hello," hearing the woman on the other end had a way of bringing Alex back to earth. In a way that only she could. "Does she still smoke?"
With an understanding of Alex's current mood Kelley sighed, "honey, you know she doesn't. She quit for you."
"I know. I remember." The silence fills the air as Alex lights another cigarette. They both know Alex will let herself remember tonight.
