As I nestled myself in Taylor's arms, I felt a familiarity that had become so lost. The feeling from just her comfort took on the world without a map and finally found its way home even if just for a moment. I pick up my head from her shoulder and meet her worried eyes. She brings a gentle hand up to brush across my cheek and clear my tears. The tenderness that I haven't felt in so long makes me lean deeper into her soft paw.
"This is very inappropriate but I want to kiss you," Taylor mumbles. Her stormy eyes leave mine just for a second to take a daring look at my lips. This was what I was worried about. We can't control ourselves around each other.
I shake my head, "Stop. You're going to do something that's jut going to make you feel guilty. I won't allow it." To make a point, I leave a lingering kiss on her cheek and part myself from our compromising position. Taylor drops her head between her knees- a wall of golden locks shielding her. In her white hoodie and black ripped jeans, she's never looked more human.
She finally picks her head up and there's never been a time when I've seen so much emotion passing her face as now. Sadness, fear, love, and anger light up like fireworks in her eyes. "I can't keep pretending like there's nothing left between us. You can't keep pretending." She stands up abruptly knocking her phone off the couch in the process.
I back away slightly not in fear of what she'll do but for fear of myself. Her lip quivers, "You know I've changed." I absent-mindedly put my arm out as a barrier.
"I know, and I'm very proud of you for that. I have no room to judge you now, you've done more than enough to prove yourself. Taylor, I just got out of a break up. You're in a relationship. We can't pretend like that night never happened, though." I see the hurt in her eyes. I've forgiven her, but that doesn't change the fact that it happened. She didn't even fight for me.
She pushes her fingers frantically through her hair as if holding her head from rolling on to the floor. "We can talk about it. I can explain everything, you don't know the whole story. I'll tell you it all if it means you'll have me back." Her eyes jump from one place in the room to another as if waiting for someone to jump out and catch her. My own brows raise at whatever she could mean. What story?
Before either of us can answer, there's a sheer knock at the door. I sigh and go to leave but Taylor stops me. She opens the door but blocks the person on the other side. I can barely just make out, "Yeah I'm sorry. Something came up. Lily needed me." Finally, Ebony comes into view and I'm taken back by her outstanding beauty. As if she came out of a business attire catalog, she makes white-collar look sexy. That's what Taylor has to look forward to every day. I evaluate my own shabby jeans and t-shirt making me feel like a pauper. Ironically, my family could probably buy Ebony's four times over.
She fixes her stance to make her seem like some principal about to yell at a bad student. My eyes find a knick in the floor and my black booted toe digs into. Maybe digging a hole out of here. "Lily," she says with a semi-smile as I chance a peak, "I hear you're joining us for dinner."
Have you ever felt like the third-wheel? That's what I'd say I feel like now except I'm like a little tricycle wheel and the perfect couple is comparable to big monster truck tires. Sitting at Taylor's island, I watch the 50's show unfold in front of me. Tonight, I Love Ebony is on, ladies and gentleman, and later Leave it to Taylor. Ebony flips Turkey burgers on the stove with her hair now out of its tight bun and in long brown tendrils. Just watching her remove the clip had me wondering why she had to be so evil. Taylor prepares a salad next to her on the counter making me watch the whole show from the kitchen island. I was told to, "sit and don't move because you're ill." At least that's what Taylor told Ebony- thankfully.
