Chapter 2
The bell rang for the last lesson of the day and my last lesson ever at the school. Thankfully the lesson was with both Abby and Emma. When we met outside the classroom door I couldn’t help but cry, they led me in the room everyone was looking at us they didn’t know, hopefully, I didn’t want a big fuss over me leaving. “What’s the matter?” Isobel asked. I shook my head and took my seat in the middle of the classroom. Nearer the end of the lesson the teacher turned to us as we were packing away.
“As you may or may not know, its Zoe Hanson’s last day at our school today” Everyone turned to me. My face felt like it was burning, I slouched in my chair shying away. “I think you should all say goodbye to her, and Zoe it has been a pleasure teaching you this year” I smiled shyly at her. Emma and Abby were the first to say goodbye, well I say that, what I really mean is cry on my shoulders.
“We’re all going to miss you” Jake said sitting on my desk. I looked up at him raising an eyebrow.
“I’m definitely going to miss a lot of people” I nodded
“Are you going to miss me?” He asked looking like he wants me to.
“No” I quickly said. His face went from happy to sad in a second. He stood up from my desk and walked off. The bell rang, we all ran out of class it was hard to today because Abby was literally holding onto my feet stopping me from walking away.
“I’ll be coming out tonight. I’ll call you, OK?” She stopped holding onto me.
“You better!” She pointed at me. “See you tonight” She waved. This was going to be yet another long walk home.
I took the long route, so I didn’t have to go past my house. On the way I past the park I’d go to every Saturday morning with my parents, I really missed those days, the days I didn’t have a care in the world, the times I went to sleep with a smile on my face and I’d wake up with an even bigger grin just because I could see my family, my proper family every day.
The day my dad was in the accident was the day everything went upside down. I could hardly sleep at night, and when I did it was nightmares.
I stepped into the house and tripped over a box. “Oh, Zoe!” My mother shouted at me.
“Sorry!” I didn’t mean it, how was I to know a stupid little box was in the way of the door. When I looked at the box it had ‘Simon’ written on it. I take back calling the box stupid, it was the box that contained pictures of me and my dad, it was like the best box in the world. “Where did you find it?” I asked excitedly. My mother smiled and knelt down next to me.
“Just looking around in the attic, I thought you’d like it” I gave her the biggest hug and looked through it. The thing that caught my eye the most was a picture of me and my dad a week before he died, it brought tears to my eyes, and mother put an arm over my shoulder. “It’s going to be OK” I looked up at her and she was trying to hold back the tears.
“I know” Rob walked through the door; mother quickly stood up and wiped away her tears.
“Ready to go?” he asked
“Go? What do you mean?” I turned to him then my mother.
“We’re going early, so we don’t hit traffic” My eyes widened
“WHAT?” I yelled looking at Rob. “I need to say bye to Abby, I promised her!” I began crying. When Robs around mother never hugs me or comforts me, she always sticks up for Rob.
“It’s easier to just leave it. She’ll understand.”
“No, no she won’t!” I stormed out and got into the back of the car. She’s really going to be mad at me.
