Today, i graduated the cadets in the top of the class, which means that i could directly apply for the militaty police. But i had no interest in that. I wanted to kill titans and avenge my mother. I was going to join the scouts no matter what. The choosing ceremony was still a few days away, and not a lot of people had decided on what regiment they were joining, but i did know that barely anyone was joining the scouts.

We were celebrating our graduation in the dining hall and making small conversations amongst each other. People kept asking where i was going and i told them the same thing over and over. The scouts. They were all surprised, saying shit about how I was in the top of the class and that I should join the militaty police.
"You're really gonna turn your back on the MP for the scouts? Why in the world would you do that? You're in the top 10".
"The scouts have always been my goal. I don't want the easy life. Not with all the work I've put in. I train to fight titans".
Thomas wagner cut in,
"Are you insane?!"
The room was filled with an uncomfortable silence as every pair of eyes averted to look at Thomas. He shifted nervously,
"Do you know how many people have died? We're talking a fifth of the population. If that doesn't paint a picture for you, i don't know what will. This is our life now. We can't beat them"
The room was silent for what seemed like forever.
"Yeah, so what? We buckle? Take it all lying down? Things have changed. Maybe not a lot, but enough. They aren't the mystery they were 5 years ago. There's still a long way to go, but we've made progress. Every battle we lost taught us a lesson. It gave us something close to hope. Are you telling me it's better to cut our losses and let all the death be meaningless? Just to ball it up and accept it? Humanity's future lies beyond the walls and I'm gonna clear the way. I'm gonna drive every one of them out. And as long as at least one of us can say that, I'm not done".
No one dared to utter a word, and the silence between everyone was unbearable. I ran out the doors and stopped at a set of stone steps. I sat down and wiped my eyes, hearing Armin call my name. I turned to see him running towards me, with Mikasa sauntering behind him, while wrapping that red scarf around her neck.
We sat in an awkward silence before Armin's voice shattered it,
"That was quite a speach you gave back there"
"Yeah. Most of it was yours. All that stuff you used to say".
"Yeah well I'm joining the scout regiment too!"
"What? Now you're just being stupid. You're not a fighter! Your life is with books"
"I'm through letting other people fight for me".
I was surprised by his response and Mikasa joined the conversation.
"I guess it's the scouts for me too then".
"Mikasa you're at the top of the class! You should be joining the military police".
"Eren. Where you go, I go. I made a promise to your mom before she died...I'm not letting you die. I've got your back whether you like it or not. So just deal with it"
"Yeah well mom's not here"
"A lot of people i used to care about aren't here either".
I gave up and leaned back, looking up at the sky. Their gazes soon followed mine to look at the stars shining above us.

We stood in a crowd of people as the main unit of the scout regiment passed by. The crowd seemed to have a different energy, like they were excited.
"Look! it's captain Levi!" a single voice was heard over the bustling crowd.
I looked into the thin grey eyes of captain Levi and he returned my gaze. His eyes seemed to widen at me for a second, before he looked away. I continued to look at him as he disappeared from my sight. Corporal Levi....
"Hey lookie here"
I looked over at the source of the voice,
"Mr. Hannes!"
"Word on the street is they let you graduate yesterday. Either you've grown up or our standards plummeted"
"Oh yeah like you're one to talk. The core keep their new chief in the drink?"
"Watch it"
He flicked me on the forehead and paused,
"I'm sorry i couldn't save your mom".
"Me too but it wasn't your fault. You were shooting in the dark then. But nothing like that's gonna happen again. We know what we're dealing with now".

We were working on the cannons on the wall when Connie told me about him joining the scouts.
"What? What happened to the MP? You were so set on that".
"Don't worry about it. A guy's allowed to change his mind".
Mina came up behind me and told me how my speach won him over and then connie lost it, saying that he decided on his own. Thomas walked over,
"Hey it's not like you're the only one who changed his mind".
"You?"

There was a loud explosion and a thick cloud of steam, as we came face to face with the colossal titan. The force of impact knocked us off the wall. We activated our gear and anchored onto the wall, coming to a stop. Connie looked down,
"Samuel!"
Sasha released one of her hooks from the wall and ran down after him. She pressed the trigger and her hook went through samuel's leg, leaving him hanging upside down.
"Try not to move, okay?"
That was too damn close
We looked at the fresh hole in the wall in shock. They're gonna get in soon.
I glared at the top of the wall.
"Lets go! Our target is the colossal titan! Don't let ot get away!"
I flew up to the top of the wall and once again came face to face with the colossal titan.
"Hey. It's been a while".
