Most days, Lothal is a nice, quiet place. You can even avoid the Empire most of the time, if your smart and stay out of their way.
Not today.
Today Lothal was crowded, with just thousands of people standing around doing nothing. I mean, if you're going to stand in the way, could you please do it in front of the Empire?
Maybe it wasn't the best idea to try to steal some credits from the Empire. Maybe it wasn't the best idea to take on an Imperial Agent by myself. Maybe I shouldn't have punched him in the face.
Right now I'm running from what passes as the peace keepers here. There are a few stormtroopers behind me, and I know that any other day, I could get away from them. But no, these people had to stand in my way.
Turning, I pushed through a big crowd of people and ran down into an alley. I paused for a second and tried to catch my breath. Had I lost them?
A blaster bolt hits the wall right next to my face. Apparently not. I start running again, dodging around the obstacles in the alley. I jumped over a trash can and threw it down behind me to try and slow the stormtroopers down.
I could see the end of the alley, and the stormtroopers were far behind me. Yes! I was going to make it!
Then this kid runs into me from behind and we both go down.
"What the heck?!" I yell, rolling onto my back and punching the kid.
"Ow! Quit it!" He says, picking himself off of me.
"What is your problem? Can't you see that I'm trying to get away from the Empire here?"
I study the kid. Black hair, blue eyes. Orange jumpsuit. He looks sixteen, like me.
"Hey, we better go.." He says, pointing behind him and at the stormtroopers, who are getting closer and closer to us.
Stupid kid. If I go to jail today, I am so taking you down.
He grabs my hand and pulls me along behind him, and I can't help but wonder what he was doing behind me. Is he another Imperial Agent?
He glances at me, like he sensed my confusion. "I'm Ezra Bridger." He says, pulling me around another trash can. "I'm a rebel."
"You're a rebel? You honestly expect me to believe that?" I ask, almost laughing. Wow. The kid has a sense of humor.
"Of course I'm a rebel! Why else would I save you?"
"I don't know, to turn me in later?"
"Why would I want to do that?"
I shrug. If our roles were reversed, I definitely would have considered it. But then again, no one deserves the cruelty of the Empire.
"Hey, we're at the end of the alley!" He says.
I glance behind me and see that the stormtroopers are still behind us by a few feet. Some of them pull out their blasters and get ready to fire.
"Well, nice meeting you and all, but I usually try to avoid being captured by the Empire." I say, tugging my arm out of his grasp and running through town again.
I hear footsteps behind me, and I roll my eyes. "Look, Ezra.." I say, turning around.
Then I gasp. It's not Ezra at all. It's a storm trooper.
He grabs my arm and starts pulling me down the street. My other hand goes instantly to my pocket for something to help me out.
Nothing but lint.
