I slid the door of the kitchen closed and walked up to the refrigerator, pulling it's door open and looking for a Naked smoothie we recently purchased. I found one and then went up to my room with it, taking small sips of it.
As I was making my way upstairs, I literally run into something. My head smacked against their chest, leaving a headache behind. I groaned and tumbled back, dropping the smoothie. If I were to fall, I would have to find a way to avoid falling on my stomach. But my fears stopped when hands clamped tightly around my arms, stopping me from falling.
My eyes shot open and they landed on Terrance first, his eyes wide with relief and shock. "Shit, I'm sorry," he told me quickly, breathing out a disgruntled breath. "We didn't see you until we were around the corner."
I stood up straight and furrowed my eyebrows, a small frown working on my face as I regarded him. "It's okay," I said, smiling at him a bit. "I didn't see you until the last second, either."
He sheepishly smiled and released my arms, scratching the back of his neck. "Uh .. Are you alright?"
"I'm fine." I nodded. I was going to say something else, but the person beside him started speaking.
"You don't seem fine." I turned my eyes to the girl, instantly recognizing her to be Carly.
"I am." I made her meet my eyes, holding her gaze. She squinted slightly at me and seemed to hesitate, before lifting her chin and nodding hesitantly.
I rubbed my hands together slightly and switched my gaze to Terrance again, saying slowly, "Not that I don't want you here or anything, but why're you up here?"
Terrance and Carly shared a long, knowing look with one another that made me want to slap the both of them. That, or scream and throw a temper tantrum like a four year old who didn't receive the toy they wanted for Christmas.
How hard was it to tell me certain things, things I felt I deserved to know? I, for one, am not so stupid that I should be left out of things that involved my family and their safety. My safety is being treated like an utmost importance, and yet they don't seem to give a small shit about their own well being.
The silence lasted longer than my comfort usually allowed, and Carly and Terrance continued staring at one another like two frozen statues stuck in the same stance. Breaking the silence seemed, for me, like the best thing to do so I prepared to make that happen.
Just as my mouth opened, Terrance and Carly's heads snapped to me and Terrance said, "We were in the children's bedrooms," he admitted, blowing air out of his nostrils. The sound was one of relief, an escape of air that had been held back for such an amount of time.
My eyes dropped to my feet like stones and suddenly my tongue leaped into my throat, preventing me from speaking like I wanted to. So, they were here because of that.
"Why?" I asked stupidly, swallowing something down in my throat. It pained me every second that my niece and nephew were gone, while my sister was laying in a coma at the goddamn hospital and there was nothing I could do.
"We were trying to capture the scent of the kidnapper," he told me, reaching out and lacing his fingers through mine to reassure me.
"Ah .. Right .." I whispered hoarsely, wincing and folding my free arm over my stomach. "Um .. Did you?" I forced myself to look up at him again, searching his face.
"No." He shook his head sadly, squeezing my hands and giving me an apologetic look. "I'm sorry. All we found was a stale scent."
"Stale?" I breathed out, frowning deeply. "What .. Species?"
"We can't be sure," Carly answered, sticking her ands under her cardigan and snuggling them under her armpits. I noticed this movement and noted that I used to do it whenever I got chilly. I didn't think werewolves got cold, they're practically furnaces. "We caught a mix of things. A little dragon, human, and warlock, but they're not strong at all. Somethings not right."
"Well yeah," I said dryly, sucking on my tongue to hold back a heavy sigh. "My niece and nephew were stolen from their own beds. That tends to be a bit sketchy."
Terrance shot me a sharp look and shook his head, silently telling me to back off and just listen. With a deep breath I glanced at Carley. "Sorry."
"No problems.." Carley smiled sympathetically at me and then said, "We're going to try our best to detect the scent outside the house."
I rubbed my slightly chilled, yet sweaty hands, and thought for a long moment. I didn't know what to say, except that maybe I should thank them for helping the family. Well, possibly they deserved a tad bit more than a thank you. I could invite them to dinner..
"Would you guys like to come over for dinner tonight?" I ended up asking, looking at them hopefully.
Carly and Terrance shared a long look. "We want to, Faye, really we do.."
"But?" I sighed, making a motion with my hand to tell them to continue quickly. "Go on. Don't drag it out."
"We're going to try our best to find those babies." Terrance engulfed me in a hug and mumbled in my ear, "I promise."
"I believe you." I buried my face in his shoulder, and that's when the door downstairs slammed open, breaking the hinges.
