Katie fell into a deeper depression. She didn't think she could be sadder than she was yesterday, or the day before, or the day before that, but yet there she was sobbing on the bathroom floor with her phone shattered in a million pieces on the other side of the room. How could he? She thought. How could he throw 5 whole years away on the one girl that he knew I hated the most? With the last bit of dignity she had left, if she even had any left at all, she pushed herself up, supporting herself on the wall behind her. She looked up and saw her reflection stare back at her. Disgusting. Useless. Pathetic. The mirror cracked beneath her knuckles, staining them red. A puddle of thick, red blood formed in the sink. When Katie realized what she had done, she tried to pick up the shattered glass from the floor in an attempt to clean up her mess, but only cut her hands and fingers in the process. The whole scene was a bloody, shattered mess. Katie fell to her knees and palmed her wet, bloodshot eyes. She barely had time to think before-
"Katie, what the hell have you done? Your hands! Oh Katie, honey.." Katie's dad fell to his knees alongside Katie with a wet towel. He whispered to her as he dabbed the wet towel to her palms and knuckles, turning it a shade of pink. "Look, Katie. I'm not sure what's going on in your life right now, and I'm not sure how to help, but I promise that I'll do the best I can. Is it that damn Tony? I'll beat him up, all you need to do is ask. I'll have him tapping out faster than you can say RKO." The both of them laughed, Katie almost forgetting completely why they were in that situation in the first place. "Do you want to get out of here? The island, I mean. I know that since we've been here it hasn't been easy on you. You miss all of your friends back home in Cali, I can see it every time you talk about them. I know you hate school, and you hate the time difference. If you want to go home, I think you're old enough at this point to make the choice for yourself." Katie's eyes lit up with excitement.
"Like, by myself? Are you sure? Why don't you just come with me?"
"You know I have to stay here and take care of your grandparents. I'm not going to make you suffer because of my responsibility."
Katie took a minute to think, but not a long minute because the choice was obvious.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you. Yes, of course I want to go. I promise I'll visit when I can. I'll get a job and buy a ticket back out here to visit the very first chance I get. I love you so so much!"
"How about you get cleaned up in the bathroom downstairs. I'll try to get this cleaned up here." Katie hugged her dad for the longest time that she could remember, then pushed herself back up and left to prepare for her shower. I'm coming home.
