"Sara, come on! Everyone's there already! They can't set up without the tents! Which, let me remind you, we have!" Katie shouted up the stairs at Sara.
"Okay okay. Let's go." Sara hopped down the stairs carrying an oversized duffle bag and a large pink suitcase.
"Is that even necessary?"
"A week is a long time. I have to be prepared for everything." Sara said, lugging her bags along with one of Katie's outside and into the car.
The car ride was long. Maybe an hour or 2. But they finally made it to the clearing in the woods where the others were waiting, leaned up against their cars.
"About time." Nick laughed, pulling Katie in for a hug. "Long time no see, ah?"
"I missed you, Nicholas." Katie sighed into his chest.
"Okay, how about we get this set up before the sun goes down." Brennen clapped his hands together once before opening the trunk of Sara's car and retrieving the 4 tents that Sara had locked away in her basement. He looked up. He and Katie locked eyes. Katie blinked and turned away from his gaze.
For 3 hours, the 6 of them attempted to pull the tents together. In the end, Zanden, Nick, and Brennen ended up doing all the work, finishing just before sunset.
"Looks good, boys!" Gianna raised her Dr.Pepper in the air. "What about a fire?"
And with almost no time to spare, the boys got the fire started. The fire illuminated the clearing. The moon lit up the rest. The 6 of them settled in around the fire and began to tell stories about the crazy things that Katie missed. Gianna told the story about her awkward prom date. Zanden told the story of one of his crazy ex girlfriends, Nick told a story about his parents' divorce (a sad twist, but nonetheless a moment that Katie appreciated him sharing). Katie told her stories of her experiences on the island and told them all about the crazy islanders with their stupid pidgin accents and mocked them in the same tone of voice most of her school friends would use. Zanden checked his phone and made an exaggerated gasp.
"11:34? It is way passed all of our bed times!" He joked. They all agreed that it would be best if they all hit the hay so they could wake up tomorrow morning to finally get their camp routine started. Nick and Zanden shared a tent as Brennen wanted his own. Katie and Sara shared one because it was obvious that they were the closest pair. Gianna being the drama queen she is, got her own tent as well. Most of the lights in the tents went out about a half hour later. Katie stayed awake in her tent for maybe an hour more, reading and just melting in the blissful thought of her finally being home with the people she loves and calls family. She finally fell asleep around 1AM with a wide smile on her face.
