Taurus had no prior experience saving the world. Her only know-how was from the numerous amounts of books she read. In every single one of them, the protagonist would be calm, cool, and collected. They would get a whole army of people and fight the evil person, the heroes always winning at the end. Hence, she wasn't sure how to save the world. Heck, she wasn't even sure if this was even real! What if it was just her friends - no, classmates - pulling a prank on her? What if she had been reading too much into this stuff? How would she know? Simple - she just wouldn't.
Taurus slumped off her bed and trudged downstairs. But when she was halfway down, she noticed something. Both her parents were waiting at the bottom of the stairs, rather uneasy looks on their faces. "Um.... Taurus? We need to talk to you."
Taurus frowned in confusion. "Sure mom, dad. But what's the matter?"
Her mom spoke up this time, not before sharing a glance with her husband. "Why not we, uh, sit down and talk about it. Okay?"
Taurus nodded slowly. "Sure!" she agreed, and clambered down the rest of the stairs. Her mom and dad led her to the couch, acting much too affectionate. They sat her down, then sat down themselves on either side of Taurus, looking at each other back and forth, as if to say, "You go first!" or "No, you go first!" again and again to each other. Finally, her dad signed and spoke up.
"Taurus? Um, I'm just going to get right to the point. You didn't get into Zodiac Academy through scholarship."
Taurus paled. "What?" she gasped, her voice barely audible.
Her mom looked down at her pants sheepishly. "Yeah, um, it's true, honey. You didn't get into Zodiac Academy through scholarship. Neither did any of your new classmates and friends."
Taurus gasped suddenly, turning towards her mom. "Wait, so how did I get in? Did you guys pay?! It's really expensive, I've heard!"
Taurus' parents smiled sad smiles. "Ah, Taurus. Always thinking about us more than yourself. No, we didn't have to pay."
Taurus cocked her head. "Then how did you?"
Taurus' dad sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "It's a bit of a long story. Your name wasn't always Taurus, you know?"
Taurus frowned. "What?!"
Her mom nodded. "Yeah. It was Erica. For a long time, your name was Erica on your birth certificate!"
Taurus' dad continued. "But one day, you did something crazy, that I didn't know what to make of. We were outside, just the three of us, driving back from the arboretum or zoo or something like that. Anyways, the place was far away, so we didn't think it would start raining so badly. It was pouring so heavily, so we could barely see the road. We crashed into this tree, and thank God, we all made it out just fine. But the car - not so much."
Taurus looked somewhat like she had just witnessed a half-unicorn, half-snake, half-fairy creature changing clothes - a crazed, wacky look. Heck, she could've seen that and found it more normal than what her parents were saying right now. She was in a car crash?!
"So your dad and I tried to get someone to come, but nobody was out in that much pouring rain, when it was so dark. So we decided to walk over to the nearest building and take action. Unfortunately, on our way there, we hit some tragedy. You.... uh, you got struck by lightning."
Taurus screeched out loud. "WHAT?!" she yelped. She wasn't sure how to react - should she start running around the house yelling or make a t-shirt that says, 'STRUCK BY LIGHTNING (and survived!)'? She settled on just sitting there and listening on. Her parents clearly weren't done. "Then what happened?!"
Her dad clucked. "This is where things get weird. When the Lightning hit you, you didn't scream. In fact, you were scared before, but suddenly, you were fine. It was as if the Lightning helped you. And suddenly, well..... the Lightning got real big & bright & huge. And you were apart of it, floating inside it."
Now Taurus looked at her parents as if they had just told her she was magic - which they kinda just did. She raised an eyebrow skeptically, and said, "Okay, you know you don't have to make up things, right? No matter how boring the real story is, I don't really mind?" But her parents just stared back, frowns painting their faces. "Wait. You don't mean that..... it's real?!" She slammed her hand onto her mouth, shocked.
Her mom was real quiet now. "When you were in the beam, we couldn't see much, since it was so bright. But.... when you fell, you were.... you were a, um, a bull." Her mom struggled to say this. Taurus' eyebrows practically hit the ceiling. "We rushed you over to this gas station, where they took us all to the hospital in the middle of the pouring rain. Apparently there was some other boy named Luke at the same hospital with the same problem, but no doctors to help either of you. I clearly remember, you weren't conscious and neither was he, so that poor child's parents, your dad and I all cried together. They finally got some rare doctor from the next town over to check you guys out. He called us all at the same time to talk to him about your.... situation, for a lack of words."
"The doctor told your mom and I - and those other parents - that you are 'special'. Some rare zodiac person or something, who was destined for great. He said you and that other boy have a weakness to Lightning, so that can affect you guys. He was a kind doctor, but he told us we had to leave immediately. You know, like in those protection programs. Our family had to move to one city, while they moved to another. You guys also had to change your names. You to Taurus, because apparently that was your zodiac counterpart or something, but for the life of me, I can't remember that boy's new name. Maybe you go to school with him?" Taurus just shrugged, stuck in a total daze.
"But where does my school come in to all this?" Taurus asked after a dumbfounded second.
Her mom spoke up. "The doctor told us that it wasn't safe for you to stay here. If such an event happened again - what would we do? The news and press would get all over the scene - and that isn't necessary. So the doctor told us to move away until you were older. Apparently there was some kind of safe house for your kind or something called 'Zodiac Academy'. And that's why you are here. Uh."
Right then, Taurus wanted to tell her parents about it. How zodiac academy was no longer - if they ever were in the first place - a safe haven for zodiac kids. Zodiac Academy was a bad place for them - disguised as the opposite. But how was she to say that? It was too much to process for one night, too much to think, just simply too much. Plus, now that she knew, she had to do something about it - she couldn't just let it go. So silently, she mumbled, "I think I'm gonna go sleep. I'm not hungry." And with that, she slumped back upstairs, carrying more weight on her shoulders than when she first came down.
