After finally getting their room set up, Jacob and Colby lounged on their futon scrolling through the channels they had on cable. As suggested by the many upperclassmen, everybody had their doors propped open to be more sociable. People walked back and forth in the hallway, some still hauling up boxes.

One wing of their hall was full of only guys, but the other wing had girls. Connecting the two hallways was a lounge area with couches, chairs, TV, and a small kitchen.

"I'm already bored," Colby groaned.

Jacob sighed. "Then go and talk to people."

Colby glanced towards the door. "I'm too lazy."

"How are you going to make it through school?" Jacob laughed.

"Once classes get started it will be fun," Colby smiled.

"Have you ever been here?" Aaron laughed from the doorway once more. "Sorry, I don't mean to eavesdrop, but you're hard not to hear when walking by."

Colby crossed his arms. "No, I've never been here, but I'm sure it will be fun."

"It will be, but it is also difficult, you know," Aaron said. "I'm Aaron, by the way."

"I know. The dean's son. I'm Colby, and this is Jacob."

"Oh, jeez, and here I was hoping nobody would know," Aaron groaned.

"If it makes you feel any better, I had no clue," Jacob chimed in.

Aaron laughed. "Yeah, I guess that helps."

"Aaron!" a girl yelled. A slim girl with blond hair pulled in a messy bun stepped into view, grabbing Aaron's sleeve. "You said you were coming to help me make my bed into a loft."

"Oh, sorry, I got caught up talking," Aaron said sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. "Kira, this is Jacob and Colby. Jacob and Colby, this is Kira."

Kira looked over, her bright blue eyes falling on the two boys. "Oh, hello."

Colby quickly bounded up and grabbed Kira's hand with a smile. "Hello. Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?"

Aaron bellowed in laughter and Kira smirked in amusement.

"No, but I broke a nail crawling out of hell," Kira said.

"Kira!" Aaron tried to scold, but he was still trying to recover from his laughter.

"Ok, so it was a cheesy line," Colby said with a shrug.

"Alright, I think that's enough," Jacob laughed, getting off of the futon and dragging Colby away. "Sorry about that."

Kira laughed. "No need."

Jacob noticed a circular pentagram necklace hung around Kira's neck. The symbols and Latin words on it were perfectly sculpted.

"Isn't that a demon warding pentagram?" Jacob asked.

Kira looked down at her necklace as if she had to remind herself what it was. "Very observant! If you know that, you won't do half bad in classes," Kira laughed.

"Isn't that really hard to make? I mean, everything has to be perfect for it to work. Otherwise everyone would have them," Jacob said.

Kira nodded. "It was passed down in my family."

"Really? What kind of family do you have?" Jacob laughed.

Kira's smile dropped and nervously rubbed her palms together. "Oh, you know... what about you?" Kira said, quickly changing the topic with a smile. "What kind of family do you have if you're at this school? Of course, if you don't want to tell me you don't have to. The unspoken rule here is to not bring up family. There aren't many happy stories."
