KAYLA:

"Kayla!"

I jumped. Lizzie's face hovered above mine, looking worried.

"Are you okay?"

I tried to smile, but my attention was caught by someone else. The someone that had been on my mind ever since this morning.

Amy.

She was sitting there in the middle of the cafe, flagged with ridiculous perfect girls and guys. They were chatting and laughing, she the centre of the attention. For a while, I stared at her, watching the way she tossed her hair, envying the way her eyes tilted upwards when she smiled. Why was God so unfair? Why must the meanest of mankind be bestowed with the best of looks all the time?

I strained my eyes, remembering something else. Where was Cal?

Lizzie followed my line of vision, and rolled her eyes when she saw what I was looking at.

"Amy Mardling-Scott, aka the part-time model, aka the school cheerleader, aka the full-time beach," Lizzie said, munching on her carrot delicately as Summer, a girl with curly black hair joined us.

"Yeah, her heads so bug, I'm surprised she can fit through doors. But that's to be expected I guess. Her family's filthy rich, even richer than the Cafferty's, and physically at least, she's almost perfect," Summer chimed, her voice high.

"Heard she was mean to you on your first day here. What happened?"

I blushed. "Erm, I asked her whether she bought her shirt at Asda's." Lizzie and Summer stared at me open mouthed, before suddenly bursting into laughter. "Hey, I didn't know it was offensive!" I blabbered, trying to defend myself, my face red.

"Awh, Kayla, you're so sweet! Well, I guess to other people, it would be a common enough question, but to Amy..."

They laughed again.

"That's okay, Kayla. You have nothing to fear now. You're with us!"

I scrunched my forehead, confused.

"And that would protect me... how?"

Lizzie pretended to be hurt, clutching her heart. Summer grinned.
