//before I start, I want to thank all of you for being so supportive, I love you guysss x\\

"WAKE UPPPPP!"

I scream at the top of my lungs, roll out of my hammock, and onto the ground smack on my back, looking up at a hysterical Minho.

"Big day Careless , and I swear one of these days I'm going to stop waking you up and you'll have to wake yourself up. C'mon! We're burning daylight!" Minho laughs and pulls me up.

I look through the roof of the homestead to see the sky, a dark gray one.

"What daylight?" I groan and weave around the sleeping bodies, Minho's snickering being the other only sound besides soft snores of the Gladers.

It's been two weeks since my first run, and I took to it fairly quickly according to Minho. He thinks today I can go out on my own for the first time. With the new walkie talkies, I'll never be too far away from anyone, just the click of a button. There's only one person that doesn't want me to go alone.

"Care, are you sure you're ready?" Newt jogs the best he could over to Minho and I. "Are you sure she's ready?"

"I'm going to be fiiiine Newt! I got this."

He takes my hand into his and strokes it with his thumb.

"You don't have to act all tough because you're in here with a bunch of boys. This is huge Caroline. If you don't want to do it, you don't have to." Newt whispers so only I can hear.

"All boys AND two girls. I have to show this chick what girls can do here in the Glade, and I want to do it. I finally found something I can do to help out, and I'm doing it. Plus I'm only going out for a half day today."

Newt brings my hand to his lips and murmurs a 'yeah yeah' before he kisses it.

I don't eat much for breakfast, I must actually be nervous, and Frypan hands me a really nice looking sandwich to put into my bag for lunch.

I'm just about to sneak out of the kitchen with Minho when Newt comes in tucks a walkie into my hand.

"You almost forgot a walkie!" He pulls me into a hug.

"You're actually worried, aren't you?" I mumble into his shoulder.

He doesn't say anything, just hugs me tightly back. When we pull away, I give him a small smile and start walking with Minho over to the doors, which were still closed.

"Remember your route Careless?" Minho casts a sideways glance at me.

"Yess I do! I got this."

The ground starts to shake, and so do the butterflies in my stomach as the doors slowly creak open.

"Well, good luck shank, you're gonna need it." He smirks at me before taking of down the entrance hallway.

I look behind me and see Newt standing 50 feet away, he waves at me. I wave back, turn around, take a deep breath, and take off.

I'm not even halfway down the entrance hall before a voice comes in on the walkie.

"Home base to Caroline, come in Caroline."

"Newt!" I press down the button and yell into the walkie. "What are you doing? I laugh so he can hear that I'm not angry.

"Just thought I'd ring in and catch up with you, it's been so long since I've heard your voice." I can hear my favorite silly part of Newt shining through the speakers of the walkie.

"Newt, I can still see you!" I stop, turn around, and wave to the faint figure of Newt in the distance."

"Well I missed you already." He says, almost huskily sounding through the walkie.

"Hey guys, just thought I'd remind you both that this is an ALL RUNNER'S RADIO STATION, so if you two shanks don't mind, end your conversation now so we can all get back to actually RUNNING." Minho's sass rings through my end, the other runners chiming in and making fun of us.

"Alright Care, I'll talk to you when you get back, be careful."

"Okay Newt, see you." He responds a quick bye.

About ten seconds later he rings in again. "Hi how's it going."

The radio station goes wild with beeping noises as everyone probably jeered at Newt to get off the radio.

~*~

I'm about two hours away from being done with my first day as an official on my own runner. Nothing out of the ordinary has been happening, according to the reports on the walkie.

As I'm running near the outer rings, I come across something strange. There were some huge scratch marks on the wall going horizontally down the whole wall going out to the outer rings, and they went on for as long as I could see.

"Hey Minho." I ring in on the walkie. "Are these scratch marks near the outer rings normal?" I quickly run my finger through the grooves left from the scratches and look at my fingertips. "They look fairly new, couldn't have happened too long ago."

Then my walkie starts going crazy, a bunch of beeps come in that weren't familiar to me, some of Minho's yelling barely coming through.

"...OF THE.....CARE.....GET OU.....OW....BACK..........THERE.....RUN GET OUT...THERE NOW."

Then static, I think the walkie might be broken.

I jog alongside the grooves for about ten minutes, and anear splitting metal on rock noise grows louder as I went.

"Minho, anyone, are you hearing this? Not my voice, I think my walkie's acting up, but the scratching noise? That can't be a griever, can it?"

Then the beeping happens all over again, with other voices chiming in with Minho, but none I've ever heard before, none that lived in the Glade."

"GET OU.......NOW TURN BA........OF THE.....CARE.....GET OU.....OW....BACK..........THERE.....RUN GET OUT...THERE NOW..you're going to die out here.....THERE..OUT NOW....OF THE.....CARE.....GET OU.....OW....BACK..........THERE.....RUN GET OUT...THERE NOW."

It's safe to say I'm thoroughly disturbed, there was only one thing I could make out clearly, and it was the now dead runner Ben telling me I was going to die out here in the maze. I shudder and look at my watch, I still have an hourish left. Might as well find out where this goes.

I'm walking for a few more minutes when the wall makes a sharp right turn, an area I've never been in before. I see something huge. I can't help it, I scream and drop the walkie, the chorus of voices, louder now, coursing through the speaker.

In front of me was a griever, but not just any griever, but the biggest griever I've ever seen.

I back away fast and break into a run, but I was no match for that thing, it was huge, standing at least three of the homestead's tall, four of them wide. It could almost touch both the sides of the Maze just by standing in the middle. I cover my ears as I run when it starts to catch up to me, it's metal parts scraping along the wall.

I've been running for my life for awhile now, taking a different route back to the Glade in case the griever had any sense of direction. I was hoping to confuse it with my twists and turns, but this griever was smart and kept on truckin'.

Some ivy on the ground, for some reason, felt very strongly that I would not survive, I caught my foot on it and came crashing down, hitting my head hard on the stone floor.

My vision blurry, most likely concussed, I lay on the ground, no will to get up, no matter the danger there was. I just close my eyes and wait for the end.
