Prologue:
My name is Lucas Anghelescu, I am 19 years old, and I'm a werewolf. My dad is Romanian while my mom is American and I was born and raised in America. I am the oldest of triplets with a brother, Jake, and sister, Tala, both younger by a couple of minutes.
I don't know why but I am the strongest werewolf in the werewolf community and my mom said I would find out soon enough.
It's not easy to kill us but we can die like a human if we're weakened enough and we can't heal quickly. Silver kills us slowly and painfully unless removed quickly and if we're not given the antidote that counteracts it wolfsbane will kill us.
We can shift to wolf form without ripping our clothes and when we shift back to human form we are fully clothed. Most werewolves are born as twins or triplets and have shorter pregnancies than humans.
We protect our family, pack, and even though they don't know it, the humans. We almost never attack a human and rarely turn them unless the situation calls for it or they want to be turned. The only humans that know of our existence are the American military and our government and I'm in the Navy and have been for several years with my werewolf longevity.
It's 1998 and I'm in Vietnam with what's left of my Navy team fighting for our lives in the war. We split up and I'm working my way north to rendezvous with my team. It's quiet, too quiet, I don't hear a single cricket, like they're watching, waiting to see what will happen.
Suddenly I hear a rustling in the bushes behind me and turn around just as the butt of a gun makes contact with my head knocking me out. I can no longer see anything due to my state of unconsciousness but I can feel and hear everything.
"Hurry before he wakes up this is the one they talk about being the strongest." They say as they bind my hands and drag me through the foliage toward their POW camp. They don't know what I am but know of my strength so they're not taking chances. I feel that we have stopped and feel myself being lifted into a truck or cart of some kind I hear a mule so I think it's an empty ammo cart.
They lead the mules for a little while until I start to hear more chatter and screams of pain. I'm drug off the cart and they drag me to a room and I feel the chains digging into my wrists and ankles as they put them on me. I hope my team doesn't wait too long for me.
Finally I wake up in a dirty cell and I keep myself from gagging at the scent of death. I look up to see a fairly short man sitting in a chair in front of me and I look to the chains which are on a pulley system in the center of the room and are too thick for me to break so I just look at the man assessing his rank. He doesn't look to be the commanding officer of these people more like a recruit. He notices I'm awake and notifies someone outside the door.
A few minutes later someone comes in. "I see you're awake." He says looking sure of himself. "Tell me. How are you, a mere 19 year old, the strongest sailor in the U.S. Navy?" I don't answer him knowing that if he knew he would get his scientists to test my blood so I just look away. "Now we can do this the easy way or the hard way now choose."
I still keep silent, knowing I can never give in without losing my dignity. "Okay you leave me no choice." He goes outside the door and motions someone inside, leaving as a big man comes in with a whip that's sparkling with broken glass and shards of metal.
He pulls the chains up until I can't move and locks them in place. He slashes the whip across my back and I nearly scream out in pain. He comes around in front of me and whips it across my chest but still remain quiet. I can feel the blood running down my back and starting on my chest and by now the brute is angry at my lack of a reaction, I tell my wolf to wait until I'm alone to heal me so they won't find out more about me.
He goes around behind me again and slashes at my back ten more times getting harder each time and I finally scream in pain at the last one which wrapped around my side and back almost wrapping all the way around me before he pulls it back and leaves the room lowering me to the floor.
I finally allow my wolf to at least stop the bleeding but leave the wounds until I've been alone for a while. They slide a bit of food under the door which I ignore because I can smell the poison in it and just sit there.
My shirt is shredded so I rip it off since it's useless and starting to bother the whip slashes. I fall asleep thinking about my team hoping they are alright and hoping my family doesn't mourn me because I'm missing to them.
Mark's pov:
I made it to the RV and met up with the other guys but the only one who isn't here yet is Lucas so we decided to wait ten more minutes before leaving. When he still didn't get here ten minutes later we got worried so we started a search for him. When we didn't find him we called it a night and left for the ship one member short.
Two weeks later:
We still haven't found Lucas and so he was declared M.I.A. and I was left to the task of telling his parents. I walked up to their door with a dozen eyes on me and knocked. His mom was the one who answered. "May I come in? It's about Lucas." I asked taking my hat off. "Sure, what's this about?" She asked and I told her that I needed his dad in here too. "Sam get in here and hurry!" She hollered up the stairs sounding worried and he came down almost immediately. He sat beside his mate on the couch and asked what this was about.
Well here goes. "I'm sorry to inform you that your son has been declared M.I.A." I said and his mother broke down crying and his father looked to be in shock. "Tell me you are looking for him." His mother cried and then I saw his brother and sister come down the stairs wondering what was wrong.
"Lucas is missing." I told them. "And we are doing everything we can to find him." I said and I tried to keep from crying myself at their reaction his brother, Jake, almost fainted and his sister, Tala, just hit the floor crying. I stood up and helped them over to the couch to sit with their parents and to try to console the grieving family. I finally calmed them down and left promising to find Lucas.
Lucas's pov:
It's been a year and a half now and I'm starting to give up hope that I will ever be found. I'm close to death and can barely feel my wolf anymore. After a week of refusing my poisoned food I finally gave in to the hunger and ate a little knowing I wouldn't last long without food. I can hear them talking about me outside the cell.
"ông là về cơ bản đã chết cũng có thể đốt cháy anh ta bây giờ."
(He's basically dead might as well burn him now) They said and I just couldn't bring myself to care anymore. Suddenly I see the door open and they drag me outside towards a pit and I see movement in the bushes near the pit. They get close to the fire pit and suddenly drop me as I see the ones hiding in the bushes rush towards the two dragging me.
Two of my team carry me away as the others take out the camp and free the rest of the prisoners. My wounds have opened back up since by wolf has been unable to heal me for a year now. They had loaded me into the chopper when I lost consciousness.
Mark's pov:
We had finally found where Lucas is and I saw someone dragging something towards us. When they got close I noticed they were dragging Lucas, they were going to burn him. We came out of the bushes and rushed towards the men who were dragging Lucas and they dropped him. I noticed he was still alive if barely so I got one other guy and we carried him to the chopper. We took off sending another chopper for the ones who are taking out the camp. We got close to the hospital when he stopped breathing so our medic performed CPR to get him breathing again.
He started back breathing but it sounded painful to breathe then I noticed the stab wounds where his left lung is. I almost missed it because of the slashes on his chest. We landed at the hospital and rushed him inside. "Help him now!" I yelled to the doctors and they led us to where they would help him. I stood outside the doors listening to what was happening. "We're losing him charge the defibrillator ASAP! Clear!" I then heard an electrical shock and the monitor beeping before it flatlined again. And then they shocked him again and then it started a steady beeping. They checked over his wounds and then took him in for an x-ray of his lungs and let us in for that.
"Your friend is lucky to be alive." They said after looking over the x-ray. "We're going to put him in the ICU just to make sure he won't need surgery because we're hoping his lungs will heal without it. He will need sutures for the wounds though so I need you and the others to step outside the room." The doctor said so we did and sat in the chairs outside the doors.
Finally the rest of the team made it back and I briefed them on his condition. They all looked shocked but happy that he was still alive and we didn't have to bury a team member and friend. "We are to wait out here while they patch up his wounds and we won't know for sure what happened until he wakes up and is ready to tell us." Finally the doctor came out to update us on his condition.
"Your friend should be fine but it is unclear when he will wake up, we believe he is in a coma to help him heal." I nodded and our captain walked in demanding to see Lucas. "I'm sorry sir, you will have to wait until we get him in a room." The doctor told him and the captain was fuming.
He looked ready to punch the doctor so I called him over and told him about Lucas's condition. They finally brought him out on a gurney and took him up to a room. To say he looked bad would be an understatement, there were bruises on his face and body and he had slashes all over his chest and abdomen and I was unsure about his back which looked almost black from the bruising I could see.
He looked like he's been through Hell and back five times. I watched as they took him away and barely heard the doctor say the room number. We went to room 462 and sat with him hoping and praying he would wake up. I heard the captain talking on the phone to his parents and then he hung up saying bye. "His family is on the way." He said and I just nodded, Lucas is like a brother to me and they would have had to do something terrible to weaken a werewolf to the point of death. I fell asleep thinking of all we have been through.
I woke up 8 hours later to hear his parents knocking on the door so I let them in. His mother and father looked like they haven't slept and Jake and Tala didn't look any better. I motioned them inside since the rest of the team left. His mother broke down as soon as she saw him. The doctors didn't put him in a hospital gown because of his wounds so he's left in his pants without his shirt and they put him on oxygen for his lungs.
"Când aflu cine a făcut asta am de gând să le rupe în bucăți."
(When I find out who did this I'm going to rip them to shreds) Lucas's father said in Romanian looking about ready to shift so his mate calmed him down so he wouldn't shift and tear everyone to pieces. "What happened to my son?" He asked through gritted teeth. "We won't know exactly what happened until he wakes up and tells us but we found him just in time. They were about to burn him to finish him off since he was already almost dead and he almost did die before the doctors helped him." I said and Tala fainted so I helped her up and into a chair.
She finally came to and I sent Jake to get her water. He came back with it and she took it gratefully. "Are you okay now?" I asked her and she nodded her head. "He must've cut his connection with us or we would've felt what he was feeling the whole time." She said. He had told me that since they were triplets they felt what each other was feeling. "Your son is a great man we met when I joined." And I told them the story of when I found out about him being a werewolf and how I nearly passed out from fear making them laugh. I helped calm the family's nerves and then left them with Lucas and went to the motel where the team was staying and went to bed.
Lucas's pov:
I feel like I'm floating, I can't feel anything. I hear my dad asking who did this to me and he started speaking Romanian.
"Când aflu cine a făcut asta am de gând să le rupe în bucăți!"
(When I find out who did this I'm going to rip them to shreds) I heard mom tell him to calm down and he took a deep breath and then I couldn't hear them anymore.
A month later
Time seems to fly by, I hear my family asking for me to wake up but I can't, I can feel my wolf again but I still can't wake up. My team comes to visit but I can't talk to them like I want to.
I try to move and I guess I succeeded in moving my hand because Tala spoke up. "Doctor he just moved is that a good sign?" She asked and then started begging me to wake up. "Please wake up Lucas I can't lose my brother." She said when the doctor left and I heard the sadness in her voice.
I tried to wake up again and finally managed to open my eyes for a second. "Lucas, I swear if you don't wake up I will never forgive you." She said and I knew it was a lie but tried again and this time opened my eyes to see her staring at me.
"Take a picture it'll last longer." I said and she squealed and tackled me in a hug.
Mom and dad woke up asking what was going on until they saw me awake and called the doctor in here. Jake peeled Tala off of me and the doctor came in to check on me. "How do you feel?" He asked after checking my vitals.
"Good now that I'm awake." I said. "I heard everything everyone was saying but I felt like I was stuck in between life and death I couldn't wake up." I told them.
Dad was on the phone talking to someone. "Yes sir he's awake, yeah, yeah. Okay bye." He hung up and looked at me. "Your team is on the way." He said and I was glad I would be talking to them again.
"I'm glad to have my son back." Dad said and mom agreed. "We would be heartbroken if we had lost you." Tala said.
A few minutes later my team came in. Mark asked what they done to me in the POW camp and I told them. When I was finished I looked at dad to see he was fuming so I asked him if he was okay.
"Spune-mi cine a făcut asta la tine, așa că am să le pot rupe în bucăți." (Tell me who did this to you so I can rip them to shreds)
"nu vă faceți griji tata care acestea au fost deja luate de îngrijire." (don't worry dad they have already been taken care of) we spoke in Romanian and he calmed down after hearing they were dead.
"What did you say Lucas?" Mark asked and I told him. "I guess you werewolves are really protective of your families huh." He said and I nodded. "Why did you cut your connection with us Lucas?" Tala asked. "You wouldn't have wanted to know the pain I was feeling and I didn't want you in that kind of pain." I told her.
"I'm glad you found me when you did, I almost gave up completely and I thought I would never be found." I told Mark and the team. "I had given up hope and almost let go of the last bit of life I had left." They told me I had quit breathing on the chopper and one other time and someone had to perform CPR on me so I would breathe again. The team left but captain Thompson and Mark stayed. They asked why I was captured and I told them what the Vietnamese wanted to know. "They wanted to know why I'm stronger than a human and I wouldn't tell them so they tortured me." I said.
"I'm glad you lived to tell the story Lucas." Mark said. "Although I would have loved to have gotten my hands on their commanding officer so I could make him pay for what they did to you."
"We're all glad you held on and didn't accept death completely because if you had we wouldn't know what to do without you." Jake said and I smiled.
Just then Ruvel appeared for a visit. Mark and my captain know what he is and are a bit nervous as to why he's here. "Hey Lucas you feeling better?" He asked.
"Been better but I'm breathing which is good enough for me." I said and he nodded. "Good to see you out of that coma." He said and the others agreed. "I gotta get going have some more jobs to get to glad your soul isn't in our vault." He said smiling before he disappeared. The soul vault is where they put the souls awaiting judgment when there are too many deaths to get to immediately.
Then captain Thompson and Mark left saying bye and it was just me with my family. Dad spoke up and asked how they managed to overtake me and I told him how they captured me. "I wasn't aware of my surroundings like I should have been and they snuck up behind me." I said and then fell asleep no longer able to keep my eyes open.
