CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Max' PoV
I woke up the next morning, tired as always. Jessie was still sleeping so I decided to go downstairs and wait for her to come. I sat down on the sofa in the living room and stared mindlessly out of the window, looking at the birds in the garden. I heard Jessie enter the living room. ‘Why are you here?’ she asked softly. ‘Just thinking, I’m still tired but I couldn’t sleep so…’ I replied, not taking my eyes off of the window. ‘You know Jess, I’ve always wanted to be a bird,’ I said randomly. I turned around and she looked at me weirdly. ‘You’re so random baby,’ she said laughing, ‘but I love it. What time is it?’ I took a glance at the clock on the wall. ‘7.30.’ ‘OH NO! I have to go soon, we’re picking my new guitarist today!’ Jessie yelled and she sprinted upstairs. I turned on the TV and decided to watch some TV while waiting for Jessie. She soon re-entered the living room. ‘How do I look?’ she asked and twirled. ‘Absolutely gorgeous as always,’ I said and smirked. She winked and than quickly grabbed her purse. ‘I really have to go now babe, sorry,’ she said and pouted. I slowly got up and made my way over to her. ‘Have fun today baby… I’ll catch you later I think!’ I pecked her lips and she rushed away, leaving me alone.

*Flashback*
‘For fuck’s sake, Jamie, get out of your bed!’ my mum yelled. I pulled the cover over my head. ‘I don’t want to!’ I groaned. I heard my mum enter my room. ‘C’mon son, you need to go out. You can’t live like this, you know that right?’ ‘Mum, please, I don’t want to. I want to sleep.’ ‘Jamie, I’m worried about you. You sleep all day long!’ I groaned again. ‘Please, do it for me. I want you to be happy. You need to forget her,’ my mum tried again. I threw the cover of me. ‘I can’t!’ I said in frustration and buried my face in my hands. ‘I can’t,’ I said sobbing. ‘C’mere,’ my mum said as she walked towards me. I placed my head on her shoulder and let the tears fall. ‘I’m not used to seeing you like this, you know I want the best for you. Someday you’ll find someone who can make you happy like-’ ‘Don’t say her name, it hurts,’ I whispered. My mum softly stroked my chestnut-brown hair. ‘I’m hungry,’ I moaned. ‘I’ll take you somewhere, pull on some clothes, all right?’ I nodded and wiped my tears away. ‘I’ll be down soon.’ My mum left the room and I pulled on my drop-crotch chinos, a striped shirt and my sneakers. I didn’t feel like putting gel in my hair so I put on a beanie and went downstairs. ‘There’s my boy!’ My mum said happily and she grabbed her bag. ‘Let’s go to MacDonald’s, I know you want to,’ said my mum. I smiled and nodded. As we stepped outside I put my hands in my pockets. My mum wrapped one of her arms around my shoulder and squeezed me. ‘Don’t think about her, it will only make it worse,’ she spoke softly. ‘I try. I understand how you feel after dad…’ I said. ‘You do really look like him,’ she said and smiled proudly. I saw her looking at her ring. ‘Do you miss home?’ I asked, changing the subject. ‘Yeah, I do. I still dream about going back to Ireland, but I love London too.’ ‘I absolutely love London, but yeah, I miss Ireland too sometimes. And I missed going out like this,’ I said smiling. We entered the MacDonald’s and joined the queue. ‘What are you going to order?’ I asked mum. ‘Same as always. You too son?’ I nodded firmly. My mum order our food and ten minutes later we were sat at a table with two big mac’s, large cokes, large fries and two big smiles. ‘Here we are, sitting in a MacDonald’s at twelve AM.’ I laughed and took a bite of my burger. 10 minutes later my food was gone and so was my mum’s. ‘Do you want to grab an ice cream on the way back? My treat,’ I said. My mum nodded smiling and we left MacDonald’s. We entered an ice cream store a few houses further down the street. I ordered our ice creams while my mum was trying to hold a conversation with the dude behind the desk. ‘I mean, why are you open? It’s twelve AM? Why would someone buy ice cream at 12 AM?’ My mum asked him. ‘Mum, you do realize we are.’ ‘Err… yes?’ My mum said. She obviously didn’t. I laughed loudly before paying and walking off, leaving my mum there awkwardly with the man. She soon left the store laughing hard. ‘What happened?’ I asked.
