CHAPTER FOURTEEN

*Still James' PoV*

‘James!?’ a voice said. Not just a voice, Jessica’s voice. My head shot up and my eyes met hers. ‘Hey, Jessie!’ I said. She opened the door, inviting me in. We walked into the living room and sat on the sofa next to each other. ‘Not being rude, but why are you here?’ ‘I’m here to pick up Ryan,’ I said casually. ‘Is he your son?’ ‘No, he’s my nephew, his parents died a while ago and me and my mum took him in.’ ‘You live with your mum!?’ ‘Hey, don’t judge me. Life has been very complicated this year and I had to move back in with her.’ ‘Why?’ I sighed and bit my lip, but thankfully I was rescued by Ryan and some other kid bursting through the door, laughing. ‘Is he your son?’ ‘No, he’s my sister’s; I’m only taking care of him while she’s away.’ I laughed and Ryan ran over to me, climbing on my lap. ‘JAMMIE!!’ he yelled. He can’t pronounce my name properly, it always sounds like he says ‘Jammie’ instead of ‘Jamie’, which is pretty funny in my opinion. ‘Jammie,’ Jessica repeated giggling. ‘What’s your name dude?’ I asked the other boy, who was sitting on Jessica’s lap. ‘I am George, nice to meet you sir!’ He said. ‘Woah, a proper gentleman!’ I said and ruffled his hair. ‘You can call me Jamie. Or James. Or Edward, whatever you feel like.’ ‘Jamie! I want to sit on Jamie’s lap!’ he said and climbed off Jessie’s lap. Jessie pretended to be hurt and placed one of her hands on her chest. ‘I feel replaced!’ she said. ‘You are,’ George said. ‘That hurt,’ Jessie said jokingly. I saw the twinkle in her eyes while she said it, that woman must love children. ‘I don’t want you to be hurt! Come and sit on Jamie’s lap too! Room enough for everybody!’ George said, bouncing up and down. I pulled a face. ‘I’m sorry, I really have to go guys.’ ‘Why can’t you stay longer?’ George persuaded. ‘I have to be home before it’s dark said mummy,’ I said pouting. George climbed of my lap and so did Ryan. ‘Your turn next time Jessica!’ George said happily. ‘We’ll see,’ she replied quickly. She stood up too and lead me to the door. ‘I hope to see you soon,’ she said. ‘Yeah, me too.’ I smiled warmly at her and turned around. I grabbed Ryan’s hand and he told about the things he did this afternoon with Jessica and George. I helped him getting in the car and before I stepped into my car I turned around one last time, looking at the doorway where Jessie was stood, waving. I waved back and got in my car. After about 2 minutes driving Ryan complained about the silence so I turned the radio on. We sang along whilst driving home. When we arrived, I helped Ryan getting out of the car and opened the door. ‘You are never going to guess with who he was with,’ I said to my mum. ‘Well tell me than!’ she said excitedly. I sat down on the sofa, my mum next to me and Ryan on my lap. ‘Jessica!’ I said, smiling. ‘Who’s that?’ my mum asked. ‘Jessie J, the girl whose guitarist I’m maybe going to be!’ I explained impatiently. ‘Wait, she’s Jessie J?’ my mum repeated amazedly. ‘She sure is! The girl who sings about money and dominoes,’ I said laughing. My mum laughed too but her face soon fell serious again. ‘Jamie, could you please cook us some dinner?’ ‘Yeah, what do you want me to cook?’ ‘Doesn’t matter, you can just check the cabinets, we’ve got lots of stuff you can prepare. Whatever you want.’ I nodded, showing I heard her and walked into the kitchen. Checked the cabinets and decided I was going to prepare Lasagne. I was chopping some vegetables when Ryan entered the kitchen. ‘Can I help you?’ he asked. ‘Well yes kiddo, you can set the table.’ He nodded and grabbed plates and cutlery and brought it to the dinning table, which was located in the living room. I placed the lasagne in the oven and set the timer at 40 minutes. Just as I did this, my phone buzzed. New text message, it said. I opened it. *Hi James, I am delighted to tell you that we have selected you to be my new guitarist! It would be great if we could meet again tomorrow to get to know you better, and tomorrow we will announce it to the band. Jessica* it read. ‘Fuck yeah!’ ‘What are you cursing at weirdo?’ my mum yelled from the living room. ‘They picked me! I have to go again tomorrow!’

I yelled back. ‘AWESOME! I knew you could do it son! What time?’ she said whilst walking into the kitchen. I blushed and bit my lip. ‘I don’t know, I think I’ll text her back.’ *Hey Jessica, awesome news! Thank you so much! I’d love to meet again tomorrow, what time? And where?* I texted back. Not even five minutes later I received a reply from Jessica. *Good, me too! How about 3 PM in the same building as today? Is that okay with you? We just want to get to know you better :)* *Yeah, that will do. See you tomorrow! James :)* I sat back down on the sofa and watched some TV with my mum and Ryan. We watched Nickelodeon, that’s what Ryan loves, and after SpongeBob Squarepants finished it was time for dinner. I grabbed the bowl of lasagne with the potholders and ran with it to the table, placing it down on the coasters before running back to the kitchen and grabbing a knife and serving spoon. I cut it and we dug in, I have to say it was good. After all of the food was gone my mum said she’ll do the dishes, so I went upstairs to my room. I said down on my bed and decided to check the channels of some of my favorite YouTubers, just because I have nothing better to do. Just as I was watching the new Smosh video, my mum yelled from downstairs. ‘James! There’s someone on the phone for you!’ I paused the video and rushed downstairs to grab the phone. My mum handed it over to me and mouthed something I didn’t understand. I shrugged at her and grabbed the phone. ‘Hello? It’s James you’re speaking with,’ I said. ‘Oh, how formal! Hey James, it’s Jessica. ’ ‘Oh hey Jessica, what’s up?’ I asked. ‘Well, about tomorrow, when we’re meeting up. Could you please bring your guitar, we’d love to hear some more!’ ‘Okay, good. How was it with George?’ ‘Good, we had a good laugh, he went to bed like 10 minutes ago. Oh, and James?’ ‘Yeah?’ ‘Don’t be nervous for tomorrow, okay? We just want to get to know you a bit better, to see if you’ll fit in and we just want to hear you play again, okay? So don’t worry.’ ‘Okay, I’ll try, thanks Jessica.’ ‘I told you before James, you can call me Jessie.’ ‘And as I told YOU before, you can call me Jamie,’ I replied laughing. ‘Okay, awesome comeback by the way. And I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?’ ‘Yeah, see ya. Bye Jessie!’ ‘Bye Jamie!’ She hung up and I let myself fall onto the sofa. I always tour around the house while I’m making a phone call, sometimes I starts in my bedroom and end in the backyard. It’s a really weird habit of mine. ‘Are you going to sleep on the sofa?’ my mum asked laughing. ‘No, I’m going to bed now. I’ll see you tomorrow, I have to be at the same place at 3 PM, so… yeah. See you.’ ‘Talking to that Jessica girl really cheers you up, and so does the whole guitarist thing. You think less about her, don’t you?’ ‘Yeah… bye mum.’ I kind of felt guilty when I left the room, but I still can’t stand people talking about… her. It still hurt. I ran upstairs into my bedroom and shut the door. I set my alarm at 7 AM, I have to bring Ryan to school. I took a shower and stepped in bed with my boxers on. I twisted and turned, but I couldn’t fall asleep. I just kept thinking about Jessica, and I don’t know why. ‘Get over it,’ I thought to myself, ‘You’ve only met her today. It’s not like she can replace HER.’
