Julie's POV
I woke up when we were about to touch down, "Already?" I asked stretching my arms. Wow, I slept long.
"Yeah, sleepy head." Jay teased.
Even through the taxi ride I slept like a log.
"Julie, wake up," Mom tapped me on the shoulder, "we're almost there."
I stretched, "Ya, are we in the city? It's awfully clouded with grey smoke outside." I noticed
"Yes." My dad answered.
"We're not going home to the countryside?" I asked.
Nobody answered for a full minute...
"We bought a house here years ago.." mom suddenly said, "..before we migrated." Then silence lingered in the cab.
Jay and I knew that if they didn't explain, then they didn't want to talk about it.
"Saan po ba liliko?" (Eng trans: Where do we take a turn?) The driver asked.
Then only did it fully sink in to me.
We're in the Philippines. We're back home.
When we migrated 5 years ago, I was deeply saddened. I told myself I'd wait for the day we'll get home.
And now that we are, I can't explain what I feel. I miss Chris and Chloe already but I was also excited to start my life here over again.
"Sa tabi nalang po." (Just drop us off at the corner) dad said and the driver helped us drop our baggage.
Then 2 adults, a man and a woman, and a teenage boy walked out of the house my parent's supposedly bought and greeted us.
"Jacob! Ailee!" They greeted my parents and my parents were overjoyed, "Ken! Ara!" they hugged each other.
"Halika, Kevin" (Come here, Kevin) The woman called out to the boy.
"Tulungan mo sila ipasok ung gamit at pagod yang mga yan sa byahe." (Help them put the luggage inside, I'm sure they're tired from the long journey.)
We situated our things in the two-storey house. It was damn big and very clean, may I say."Neat." I said when I saw my room, it's an expression I had since I was a kid when I really liked something.
"Do you like it?" The adult woman asked. "We decorated it for you." She said.
The walls were painted with beautiful shades of pastel and everything was just... right. Perfect to my taste.
"Yes, thankyou very much." I said and instinctively bowed.
She smiled, "I see you still have your korean manners." Her laugh was genuinely beautiful.
Just then, a baby's cry rang like a bell over the silent house.
I curiously blinked my eyes at her.
"My granddaughter." She smiled and gestured to me to follow. And I did.***
It was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my whole 13 years of living. Well, she was.
"Hi." This pretty lady greeted me but I was too fixated on the baby she was holding.
"She's.. beautiful." I said in awe.
"Her name's Yoo Ah Ra. She just turned one a month ago." The lady explained.
It was only then that I got to look her in the eyes.
How do I say this? We... had the same look. A look of pain, a look of loneliness that can never fade no matter how happy your life becomes. There's just this.. scar.. that can never heal. She was scarred too, I can tell.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch your names." I finally realized.
"Call me imo, Ara imo. And this is my daughter." She put a hand on the lady's droopy shoulder. "Just Yoona eonni." She smiled and her melancholy eyes twinkled for a brief second.
"Ah, it was nice to meet you." I said and smiled unconciously bowing again.
"Say hi, Yoora." Eonni said sweetly to the child. She blinked innocently at me and waved drowsily. I laughed, like really genuine laugh, for the first time in weeks.
"She's still sleepy." I noticed. "Yeah." Eonni answered as they both laughed.
" 'ma." A boy peeked at the room.
"Ah, Kevin come here." Imo gestured.
"Julie, this is Kevin. Kevin, Julie." I was surprised. I haven't told her my name yet but she already knew.
"Uh, hi." I awkwardly waved and he just stared. Like really directly to my eyes.
I looked away and excused myself to unpack. I put on my headphones as I unpacked. I noticed Mellie at the corner of my room walking drowsily in circles. I smiled. Jay must have released her. I picked her up. "Are you suffering from jetlag, Mellie?" I asked the cat, she just meowed. I placed her on a bean couch and proceeded to unpack. When I was finally done it was almost lunch. I only had a few things. I laid on my newly made bed and it was extremely comfortable. I began to drift off as one of the few korean songs Chris downloaded on my ipod began to play, 'Days when I miss you even when I see you all day. What should I do? I don't know what to do either it's awkward.'
I couldn't relate to the lyrics of the song but it was so solemn and their voices were very pleasant to my ears, I took note to search for the singers of this song as I fell asleep and these lines were being sung,
'Missing you is like a bottomless ocean, I keep emptying you out. But I miss you, miss you and miss you. I still miss you, miss you and miss you.'
