Chapter One
I stared in horror as the beast slowly approached me. A deep snarl erupted from the wolf’s massive chest, sending chills down my spine. I slowly backed up, tears spilling down my pale face. The moonlight illuminated the wolf’s horrifying glare as it sauntered closer to me. The wolf lunged at my neck, its razor fangs sinking into me as the agonizing pain filled my body, torturing me as my eyes closed.

“Destiny! Your rides here!” my mom called up to me. I barely heard her over the sound of loud music playing in my ears.
“I’m coming,” I yelled down to her, pulling on a pair of white pump heels. I stood up, running my perfectly polished hand through my long, light blonde hair. I grabbed my large ruffled gray purse and threw one last glance in the mirror. My flowing teal blue shirt was tucked into my white shorts, revealing my long, tan legs. I bounced out of my room, heading down the stairs.
“Bye, sweetie!” my mom called after me as I went out the front door.
“Bye, mom,” I smiled tightly and shut the door behind me. I pulled my iPhone out of my pocket and turned off the music, then tugged my headphones out of my ear.
I walked over to the large white truck parked in my driveway and pulled the door of the shotgun seat open.
“Hey, Des! Happy early birthday!” my best guy friend, Bae, exclaimed from the driver’s seat, smiling at me pleasantly.
“Hey,” I said quietly, looking at my lap. He glanced at me while pulling out of the driveway.
“You okay?” he asked nervously, not sure how to handle girl drama. I sighed and turned towards him, saying,
“No. It’s my seventeenth birthday tomorrow, you know, and my moms’ going out of town for work. It’s the third time in a row,” I said, frustration with a hint of pain filling my voice.
He turned his head towards me and opened his mouth to speak. I quickly held up a finger.
“Uh uh! Eyes on the road,” I said with a smile, knowing how much of a bad driver he was. He smiled back sheepishly and looked straight ahead.
“Well at least your party isn’t until Friday… won’t she be back by then?” he asked. He did have a point. My birthday was on a Wednesday this year, but I planned my party for Friday.
“You’re right. I don’t know why I’m so upset… it’s just- she’s been doing this a lot. And it’s not like my dad’s here or anything…” I looked out the window, tears filling my eyes as I mentioned my dad.
“I’m sorry,” Bae murmured, not sure what to say. I didn’t really expect him to try and cheer me up; he wasn’t good at that kind of stuff, but I loved him anyway.
We pulled into the schools parking lot and then found a place to park. I opened the door of the truck and stepped out.
I walked slowly, letting Bae walk in front of me. I wasn’t in the mood to talk to him, or anyone, right now. I pulled out my phone and glanced at the time, grimacing when I realized that the bell would ring any second.
