Chapter Four

Burning. A scorching sensation woke me up, stinging me with its excruciating flames. My eyes opened quickly to see fire surrounding me and Braedon.

“Fire!” I screamed, scrambling off of Braedon. His eyes snapped open and he jumped up quickly. The beautiful flames crackled around us, surrounding the two of us completely. Braedon grabbed my hand, dragging me through the flames quickly.

We made it through unscathed, until the arm of my hoodie caught fire. Flames engulfed my arm as I yelped out in agony. Braedon’s eyes widened, and he reacted quickly. He pulled off my hoodie, leaving me in a tank top and shorts. I continued screaming in torture as I saw my burnt arm.

The skin on my left arm was black and crisp. It had been burned so badly that some parts of my arm had no skin at all, revealing my white bone.

“Crap!” Braedon yelled as he quickly wrapped my hoodie around my ruined arm. I screamed in pain, the burn torturing me. Tears filled my scarred eyes as I bit my lip. Braedon scooped me up, running into the forest as I groaned through clenched teeth.

Braedon ran through the forest, holding me in his arms as I writhed in excruciating pain. Once we escaped the grasp of the fire, Braedon laid me on the forest floor.

“I’m so sorry! This shouldn’t have happened!” he exclaimed, stroking my hair. I screeched in pain, writhing around. My breathing was shallow.

“Destiny… please stay with me,” he whispered, leaning towards me. He pressed his soft lips against mine, relieving some of my pain. The last thing I felt was the warm press of his lips before my eyes closed.

An annoying ringing in my ears brought me back to consciousness. I opened my eyes slowly, recognizing the outline of Braedon. He was standing with his back turned to me. I immediately remembered both the fire and the kiss.

I sat up, examining the excruciating wound on my arm. My hoodie was still wrapped tightly around my arm, so I nervously untied it. My mouth dropped open in disbelief when I saw that my arm was almost completely healed. I rewrapped the hoodie tightly and stood up slowly.

“Destiny! You’re awake,” Braedon exclaimed, spinning around with a shy smile on his face.

I smiled and walked over to him, embracing him in a tight hug. He sighed with relief, like he was scared things would be awkward after the kiss. I didn’t want anything to be awkward. I laid my head against his chest, and he kissed the top of my head. After a while, we released each other.

“My arm… how did you…” I started, my head filled with emotions. He held up a small, silver box and smiled wildly. My eyebrows burrowed together in confusion.

“I’ve had this for a while, from the SST. Believe me, they are much more advanced than mortals,” he explained. My eyes were wide as I nodded slowly. How could this be possible? A small box- curing my arm that I thought would have to be amputated.

“Here,” Braedon said, handing me a handful of juicy berries.

“Wow. You’re the best,” I said with a smile, popping the berries one by one into my mouth. The berries tasted utterly luscious. My teeth broke through the first layer, exploding a burst of delicious liquids in my mouth. They instantly filled my ravenous hunger.
