Chapter Six

“Got it?” I asked after explaining the plan to him. He nodded, struggling to stay awake. It hurt me to see how much pain he was in.

“G-got it,” he said quietly, pulling himself into a better position. I took a deep breath, hoping our plan would work.

We had decided to transform into our wolf forms, break out of the room and make our way out. If we ran into anyone, we’d attack them on our way. Once we were safely outside, we would make our way back to the SST, where we would find Braedon.

“And you’re completely sure that we won’t hurt each other in our wolf forms,” I stated, checking for the millionth time. I didn’t want to attack him while I was in my wolf form, helpless.

“P-positive. We’re in the same pack, s-so we won’t hurt each other,” he confirmed, rubbing his head against his shoulder. I nodded.

“Let’s do it, then,” I muttered, closing my eyes. I focused on my wolf form, on my high senses that the wolf form gave me. I focused on the feeling of the crisp air against my pelt and the mossy grass beneath my paws. Within moments, I felt the transformation. The wave rippled throughout my body, transforming every human characteristic I had into a wolf.

I opened my eyes, looking to my left. Bae was also in his wolf form, looking dangerous yet weak. I yanked my front paws away from the ropes and they snapped. I jumped onto the ground, spinning around. Bae was doing the same, just slightly slower. The tiny part of my human conscience was screaming, terrified that I would unwillingly attack Bae. Instead, the wolf in control of me nuzzled his head with mine.

We quickly returned our attention to the escape. I pounced to the door, crashing into it with all of my force. I tore it off the hinges, sending it flying and crashing against the wall outside of the room. We bounded out of the room and down the strange hallway. My senses were so heightened; I could immediately tell how to get out of this maze-like building.

Bae followed me as I pounced down the hallways, turning each corner quickly until we reached a large, straight staircase. I bounded up it, Bae on my tail. The top of the staircase led to another long hallway with a door at the end. I could immediately tell that the door led to outdoors.

I quickly pounced down the long hallway within seconds, crashing through the metal door. I also knocked this door off its hinges, exerting my force into my pounce. Sure enough, cool, windy air surrounded the two of us.

Once we were outside of the building, we were free. Nobody could stop us. We bounded into the shadows of the deep forest, each paw against the ground symbolizing how far we were from being taken again.

Bae followed me obediently through the woods until we were far enough away to be safe. Once we decided to stop, we both collapsed into our human forms.

We both lay on the moist forest floor, Bae crumpled on his side and me sitting up against a large tree trunk. I knew Bae’s injuries were serious, if not fatal.

“We have to keep moving,” I murmured after some time had passed. Bae groaned in response.

“C’mon. Just a bit further,” I reasoned while standing. I went over to Bae and tried lifting him up but failed. He was much larger than me.

Bae finally put in some effort and slowly sat up, a permanent cringe on his face as he struggled to keep his eyes open. I stood up straight, trying to patient but knowing that if we stayed here much longer, he could die.
