Best Friend's Brother: Chapter One

This Happened Too!

My eyes cracked open as I heard small giggles coming from behind me. I sat up and tried to stretch before I was ambushed by a little giant jumping on my back. "Good morning, Mommy!"

"Good morning, Princess," I said as Melody climbed into my lap. She wrapped her arms around my neck, and I held her, closing my eyes, and savoring the tender moment.

"Uncle Harry made breakfast. He made pancakes!"

"Well, we should go eat some before they get cold, huh?" Melody climbed off my lap, and I stood up off the bed. I picked her up and hugged her again before setting her down. She dragged me down the stairs to the kitchen and having me sit next to her. Harry gave us both two pancakes before sitting down on her other side. I silently ate my pancakes while Melody and Harry talked about the tea party they were going to have today.

It's been about a month since the incident with Eric. He was arrested with no way of being bailed out. Things haven't changed with Matt since that day. It doesn't feel like we're in a relationship, it feels like we're only friends. Our spark has faded and I don't think it's just me.

I finished my pancakes and brought my plate to the sink. I knelt beside Melody, "Mel, mommy has some things she has to do today, so Uncle Harry is going to watch you today, okay?"

"Can I come with you?" Melody innocently asked.

"I'm sorry baby, not today. Next time, I pinky promise," we hooked pinkies, and I kissed her forehead. I stood up and went over to Harry, "I'll try to be fast, but knowing me I'll probably get distracted by something. Text me if we need anything else."

Harry nodded, "You should really stop by Nathaniel's."

"Why? I have no reason to. Hannah and Katie are probably at work, or they're hanging out with Autumn..." I shrugged my shoulders and started walking back upstairs to get dressed so I could run my errands.

"Have you ever needed a reason to go over there?" Harry called after me.

I pulled into Matt's driveway and went up to the door. I rang his doorbell and stuffed my hands in my pockets. Someone who I assumed was his mom opened the door.

"Hello," I greeted, "I'm Jessica. I was wondering if Matt was home?"

"Yes, he is. Come in, I'll get him for you," she opened the door wider for me, and I stepped inside, closing the door behind me. A few minutes later Matt came around the corner and stood in front of me.

"Hey," he said sticking his hands in his sweatshirt pockets, "what's up?"

"I have to talk to you about something, is there somewhere privet we could talk?"

"Yeah, we can talk in my room," he smiled, and I took off my jacket and put it on a hook by the door. I slipped off my shoes and followed Matt to his room. It was surprisingly clean as I sat on the bottom bunk of his bed.

Matt sat next to me. "What did you need to talk about?"

"Well..." I sighed, trying to find the words, "I just... I think I'd rather have you as my friend than my boyfriend..."

Matt sighed what sounded like a sound of relief, "I was so scared that I was the only one that felt that way. I didn't want to hurt you."

"Okay, cool," I awkwardly laughed, "So... Friends?"

"Best friends?" Matt countered.

"Best friends," I laughed and hugged him, "I'm glad we're on the same page."

"Me too."

"Well, I'd love to hang out but I've got some errands I have to run, so I'll see you later."

"Okay," Matt and I walked to his door. I slipped on my shoes and my jacket.

"I'll see you later, Matt." I opened the door, walking out to my car.

"Bye, Jessica," Matt closed the door behind me as I pulled out of his driveway.

I sat in my car in the driveway after running my errands. I looked in the window of the living room. Melody was asleep on Harry's lap with the TV on. I turned to look in the backseat of my car, internally praising myself for not getting anything that has to be in a refrigerator or freezer. I turned my car back on and pulled out of the driveway. 

"You should really stop by Nathaniel's house."

I shook Harry's words out of my mind and kept driving.
