CHAPTER NINE

The five of them were now running again, but the police had an upper hand, guns.

Victoria noticed this and let out a small scream, even more panicked than she already was. The three men were shot behind them, giving Brandon and Victoria a chance to escape.

The two of them ran as fast as they could, running through the streets of the large city they were in. Both stumbling upon the litter that flooded the pathways.

Bullets were shot their way, making Brandon act on instinct and tackle Victoria into the ditch they were running beside. Their heads collided, knocking them both out and leaving their sight in darkness.

• • •

Victoria and Brandon soon woke up, the duo completely exhausted. "Why'd you tackle me?" Victoria asked.

"Because it's either that or you were going to get shot by the authorit-" Brandon was cut off by a glowing light splitting into two separate lights. The tunnel they were beside started to glow as the car sped towards them.

Brandon noticed something on the hood, an envelope, another clue. Brandon ran towards the car, Victoria's screams heard in the background, telling him not to jump in front of a speeding car.

Brandon stopped as he noticed the car wasn't slowing down and instead started running in the opposite direction, back to Victoria.

She glared at him for giving her half a heart attack, "Why in the hell did you run towards a speeding car?!"

"There's another clue..." Brandon elaborated, still out of breath, "I'm not allowing them to take both my wife and my son..."

Victoria showed a confused face, "They took your wife too?"

Silence answered her question.

"Heartless pigs..." Brandon heard her murmur.

The car came speeding back towards them, "What's their problem?" Asked Brandon.

Victoria sheltered behind a tree, whilst Brandon ran past the car and jumped onto the roof, latching onto the side mirrors. It took a while before Victoria even noticed what he was doing.

Victoria went wide eyed, "What are you doing?! Are you crazy?!"

Brandon strained his arm, trying to grab the frail envelope. His finger grazed the paper surface and he gripped it like his life depended on it. As soon as he knew he had it, he leaped off the truck and started to run.

His legs burning and his lungs piercing with every step and breath he took. Victoria lagged behind, for she wasn't as athletic as Brandon was. The car eventually stopped and drove away, leaving Victoria and Brandon in a state of confusion.

Victoria took the envelope looking through it.

"What are you doing?" Brandon asked in disbelief, shouldn't he be the one to open it?

"It's written in Spanish and it doesn't look like you know how to speak Spanish... No offense."

Brandon let out a huff of defeat as Victoria slid the piece of paper out of the envelope and discarded the Spanish-scripted sleeve onto the ground. Brandon let out a groan of annoyance.

"Why would you litter? Are you trying to ruin the Earth?"

Victoria tilted her head, "Since when were you one of those tree huggers?"

"I'm not a tree hugger." Brandon stated, "I just have a strong love for nature and I don't need lazy people destroying the amazing scenery that could last for centuries to come."

Victoria simply rolled her eyes, "Anyway, it has an address here."

She then translated the address aloud, repeating it again, just to make sure they didn't forget.

Brandon took the envelope and hesitated before saying, "Look, Victoria, you've been an amazing help and everything..."

Victoria tilted her head in an adorable way it had almost made Brandon forget what he needed to say. Almost.

"And, well..." Brandon started again, his voice going quiet, "I don't really think I need your help anymore..."

Victoria's face went from confused to depressed quicker than dory could say 'Just keep swimming'.

HEY GUYS

So, I dropped another massive clue about this book in this chapter! I also added a 'tag' to the story that gives away my plot...

DON'T LOOK IF YOU DON'T WANT A SPOILER

And I am super sorry about late updates, I had my school holidays pass and I had to work on my new house with house chores to fixing fences to digging holes and tearing down old gutters.

Also, school is exhausting for my student readers out there or reading this.

Anyway... I really hope you enjoyed this chapter and hopefully I'll get another one up before the end of October!

It's my birthday on the 18th of Oct too!!!
