The Impossible Story (Doctor Who Fan Fiction

Merry

When the performance drew to a close Merry turned around and quickly noticed Clara and the Doctor. She is so excited to see the people that saved her way of life.

'Doctor,' Merry exclaimed with excitement. The Doctor turned his head in shame. Clara nudges the Doctor's shoulder to get him to respond but nothing. This creates more concern for Clara. 'Clara,' Merry then turns to Clara hoping at least for some form of response. Clara enthusiastically waves back to Merry.

'Doctor, aren't you going to speak to Merry,' Clara asks the Doctor determined to get him out of this funk.

'I can't. You go talk to her ok,' the Doctor whispers back.

'Doctor, what is it.' Clara is really wanting some sort of answer. But, the Doctor doesn't reply and she decides to not push the issue. She gets up and greets Merry at the edge of the seating.

'Clara, how are you,' Merry grasps both of Clara's hands an eager communion.

'I am wonderful,' Clara answers back knowing she is just the opposite 'and how are you?'

'I am well thank you. How is that mad Doctor of yours?' Merry notices that Clara is tearing up at the thought of the answer to her question.

'Oh, you know. Still traveling. Still mad, but the best people are,' Clara responds lying through her teeth. Merry senses Clara's lie and calls her on it immediately.

'Clara, why are you lying,' Merry asked. The poignant way that Merry said it caught Clara off guard. She had become so good at lying she didn't think she would ever get caught.

'What? Uhm... What do you mean,' Clara tries to feign ignorance to the question.

'I'm the Queen of Years. I can see through the lies. Something is wrong with you and the Doctor,' Merry left no ambiguity to the situation. Clara took a deep breath and began her story.

'It's just... He's....,' Clara can't seem to find the right words. 'He's older. He's been traveling alone, which he should never do. He has seen things... Things I can't imagine.... He is broken.' Clara takes another deep breath 'I think I can help him. I hope I can,' Clara tries to convince herself with her own words.

'And so are you Clara,' Merry interjects.

'I'm sorry,' Clara is confused with her reply.

'Clara I sense your pain and loss. You've lost something unimaginable I think,' Merry reveals to Clara. Clara can't hold it in anymore.

'How about the two people I love the most! Will that do it for you,' Clara's pain is flooding out in her words. Merry comes closer to her and holds her hands tighter trying to comfort her.'Danny... and it was... Horrible.. But,' Clara looks at her sad Doctor 'then I lost him... he lost himself.' Clara says through tears as she looks back at Merry 'and I think that is what hurts the most,' Clara is sobbing now.

'Oh, Clara! I am so sorry. Is there anything we can do to help.' Merry can't believe the story she has just been told and she is saddened by the unfortunate events that befell the two wonderful people before her.

'Honestly? I don't know. The TARDIS brought us here because we need to find ourselves and that is just what we need to do,' Clara says with determination.

'Clara, find comfort here and stay as long as you need! You are always welcome on Akhaten. I must go now. But, please help him find himself because the universe needs the Doctor. Clara, also find what you are really looking for,' Merry solemnly hugs Clara.

'Thank you Merry,' Clara is thankful for someone to talk to about the Doctor then she remembers the last thing Merry just said. 'What do you mean find what I am looking for?'

'You will know Clara when you find it and I think your first clue is in your pocket,' she looks over at the Doctor still lost in his thoughts. Clara reaches in her pocket and removes the bowtie she had shown the Doctor earlier. She nods her head understanding Merry's recommendation.

Clara bids Merry goodbye and returns to the Doctor still sitting lost in his thoughts. When she sits down the Doctor cautiously pats her on the leg and whispers 'My Clara, what did Merry have to say?'
