'Hungry,' the Doctor inquired.
'Yes, actually,' Clara remembered she really hadn't eaten in days. The depression had completely suppressed her appetite.
'Well, lead the way then,' the Doctor bowed allowing Clara to walk ahead. As they walk by the shops the Doctor catches his reflection in one of the mirrors. He pauses and smiles just a little. Clara is looking around at all of the exotic shops but she is looking for comfort food. Oh, how I would love one of mum's souffles right now Clara thinks.
'Do you think they have any non-exotic food around here.' Clara assumes the answer will be a no.
'I'm sure there is a souffle shop somewhere around here,' the Doctor replies. Clara can't believe the words that came from the Doctor's mouth.
'Really,' Clara has to confirm because she just doesn't believe it.
'Yes, Really,' the Doctor confirmed 'they dedicated it to the leaf lady,' another small grin comes across the Doctor's face. 'Oh, come on let's go! You're about to burst if we don't,' the Doctor realized he hadn't felt like this in almost a millenia. Clara also begins to giggle and covers her mouth. 'Ah, Clara that is such a welcome sight,' the Doctor unconsciously straightens his bowtie just as he used to. 'Righteo then!' The Doctor places his hand back in Clara's but he is still a bit uneasy with all of the contact. But, Clara is starting to come out of her sadness as she sees all of the alien life around them. She points out different ones and the Doctor names so many of them. Necromancers, Hullabubs, and a vast array of other aliens.
Finally, they locate the souffle shop. Clara hurries in and is amazed with the vast amount of different souffles the shop has on display. The Doctor follows in still fidgeting with the bow tie. He hasn't seen Clara this excited in a long time either and now he is about to unveil the biggest surprise ever. He leans down to Clara's ear 'Ask the clerk for Clara's special.'
'Clara's special,' Clara is perplexed with that statement. She had also seen the Doctor fussing with the bowtie and she asks ' would you like to take it off?'
'Yeah, it's a special recipe and no not yet it just takes some getting used to,' the Doctor is trying hard to make sure Clara is happy.
'May I have the Clara's special,' Clara can barely contain her enthusiasm as she asks the clerk.. The Clerk looked at her in an almost recognizable glance.
'Are you Clara,' the Clerk asks. Clara nods her head. 'I thought so because only one other person has ordered it,' the Clerk says while looking straight at the Doctor.
'A uhm, secret recipe. You told it to me a long time ago,' the Doctor admits a little embarrassed. Clara looks at the Doctor and is in awe that he would remember.
'I didn't think you would remember,' Clara repeated out loud this time. The Doctor looks down at the tile floor of the cafe and he whispers 'I always remember,' he looks back up at Clara and she returns his gaze for just a moment.
'So, how much do we owe you,' Clara asks then is worried because she remembers that payment on Akhaten was sentimental items.
The clerk looks up and simply states 'free for both of you as a thank you for saving us that day so long ago.' He then looks over at the Doctor 'what will you have sir?'
'The same and a red wine.' This takes Clara by surprise and she turns to the Doctor.
'Red wine? Since when do you drink wine?'
'Oh, about 400 years ago. A bad night. Like I said things change. Do you want something to drink or just water like normal.' the Doctor looks over to Clara. She nods in response to water. Clara goes to find a seat for the both of them while the Doctor waits for their order. He stands there quietly with his hands behind his back. Clara is watching every movement of the Doctor intently. Trying to figure out what is different and what is the same. The Doctor carefully grabs the order and balances it perfectly walking back to the table. He places the food on the table and sits himself down placing his wine next to his food. 'Smells quite good,' the Doctor comments to Clara. He watches her to see what she thinks of the souffle but examining so much more than that. Clara takes a bite of the souffle and her eyes tell it all.
'That's perfect... MMMM.' Clara couldn't believe it was exactly like her mother's. She had never been able to get it as good as this one was. 'It is perfect Doctor!'
'I'm glad,' the Doctor said as he took a sip of wine. The taste made him wrinkle his nose. Clara notices this little quirk of his.
'Soo, how's the wine,' Clara asks knowing the answer.
'Uhm, uh ok,' the Doctor was still a horrible liar.
'Are you lying,' Clara teasingly pushes the Doctor and he unconsciously, scratches his chin. 'You wrinkled your nose. You always do that when you don't like something.'
'You know me so well Clara Oswald,' the Doctor says as he puts the wine away and accepts the water from Clara to rinse the dreadful taste from his mouth. It seems the more the Doctor tries to show Clara he is different the more he proves just the opposite. Clara notices he has barely taken a bite of his souffle as he is just picking at it and moving it around the plate making it look like he had made an effort to eat. She knows immediately it is due to his depression because she was the same way.
'Are you not hungry Doctor,' Clara finally asked to make sure.
'Don't eat much these days,' he said confirming Clara's suspicion.
'Well, you should really try this,' Clara encourages the Doctor. He takes an obligatory bite and smiles to comfort Clara. They soon finish their meal and the Doctor is looking around aimlessly. 'Want to walk around a bit more,' Clara asks to bring him back into the moment.
'Oh yeah sure, whenever you want to go,' the Doctor absently agrees.
