Heart to Heart

((Author's Note: hey, guess who's suffering from extreme depression? Certainly not me! Anyway, sorry for the wait, here's the new chapter!))

Several days passed after the county fair. It seemed to have eased some tension.

Jake knocked on John's door. John jumped off his bed and walked over, opening the door, "Oh, hey Jake."

Jake smiled, "Howdy!"

John grinned, "What's up?"

"Oh, nothing much. Are you doing anything right now?" Jake asked. John shook his head. "Great! Meet me on the roof."

"Why the roof?" John frowned.

"Because I've taken a real shine to the roof." Jake shrugged.

John shrugged, "Oookay then? On the roof then. When?"

"As soon as you're ready!" Jake bounced off. John stared for a few seconds before shrugging and pulling on a better shirt.

Dirk knocked on Dave's door. Karkat opened the door.

"...I'm not interrupting something...am I?" Dirk asked.

Karkat frowned, "What the hell would you be interrupting?!"

"Never mind. Is Dave in there?" Dirk sighed. Dave hopped up and walked over.

"What can I do for ya?"

Dirk kept a neutral face, "I wanted to talk to you about John."

Karkat looked baffled. Dave nodded, "C'mon in." Dirk walked in and pushed his shades up, letting out a very tiny sigh. "Whaddya wanna know about my best bro in the world?"

Dirk stayed quiet for a few seconds before replying, "I wanna date him."

Dave and Karkat stared. Karkat started laughing hard. Dave just looked baffled.

"You...wanna date John?" Dave echoed. Karkat was now clutching his sides, laughing.

Dirk nodded.

"Uh...that's gonna be kinda hard." Dave rubbed the back of his neck, "He's...like...seriously straight."

Dirk paused, "What if he's not?"

Karkat managed to stop laughing, "I would know, he's not interested."

Dirk glanced at the troll, "How so?"

"I tried pitch flirting with him. He shot me down." Karkat grumbled.

"Maybe he just wasn't interested at the time." Dirk replied.

"He said he's not a homosexual, whatever that means." Karkat rolled his eyes.

Dirk tucked his hands into his pockets, "...Dave, what do you think?"

Dave sighed, "I mean, like, he's never really been interested in anyone. He flirted with Rose for a while but she scared him after she went Grimdark. He dated Vriska in an alternate timeline, but in this one he's scared of her and she's pretty mean to him. He tried flirting with Roxy but she started dating Jane. He told Jade he wasn't interested in dating during the Game but that's cause he figured beating the Game was more important than dating."

Dirk nodded, "Alright, but do you think I have a chance?"

Dave sighed again, "Thing is, I can't tell if you do or not. He's never shown an interest in guys, he turned down Karkat, and he thought I had a thing for Gamzee. He's kind of sheltered so he probably just doesn't understand a lot. But like...you can try."
