"You have a piano" Demi turned around from where she sat at the piano in her father's office. Dayna had just just gotten out of a 30 minute shower. Demi could tell that the younger girl had been crying but she decided not to question it.
Demi gave the girl a comforting smile "You play?" She asked, gaining a simple shrug from Dayna
"I used to" the 16 year old spoke up "probably not anymore. My dad taught me.. He used to be a piano teacher" she explained..
"That's nice" Demi smiled unsure of what to say next.
Dayna noticing the awkwardness changed the subject "So aren't you famous and stuff, haven't you got better things to be doing than looking after me" she weakly chuckled.
A smile formed on Demi's face as she laughed "Actually I haven't. I'm on a break before I start tour"
Dayna nodded taking in her words "So I'm taking up your time of peace" the smaller girl entered the room more and giggled. It warmed Demis heart to actually see her smile.
Demi rolled her yes playfully at the brunettes need to blame herself for ruining Demi's 'plans' "No I don't mind"
Dayna nodded a small smile on her lips but it faded slowly "Thank you" she said softly and desperately "for leaving me stay here.. I really couldn't bare going home" she mumbled, looking down, playing with the sleeves of the hoodie Demi had let her borrow
There it was again. The mention of 'home' "What's that like.. Home?" Demi watched as Dayna sat in the office chair, moving from side to side. She felt guilty for asking but she also felt like she needed to know to understand everything that was happening.
She shrugged "I don't know" she sighed "I wouldn't really call it a home.." She mumbled playing with her fingers. "My mom... She has a problem" Dayna spoke sadly "drugs" she glanced at Demi for a split second "our house... its kind of a go to place for the neighbour hood junkies and she's always high.." Dayna shook her head a loud sigh leaving her lips. Demi frowned upset by what the girl had to say about her mom.
" Or shouting at me.." She swallowed a large lump in her throat "I don't like it" she shook her head "that's why I came to Diana.. I wasn't sure of what my plan was... If she wanted to know me.. But I had to get out. I don't want to end up like my mother.." A few tears rolled down her cheeks.
Demi's heart broke at the revelation of everything, resulting in her standing up and walking to the upset teen "You're nothing like your mother... Your mother is a scared woman who got lost.. But you're strong, brave.. You want to be found..and that takes courage" she stroked her damp curls "I'm sorry that you've gone through all that Dayna.. I wish I could change it but I can't.. Right now all you can do is focus on your future.. " she tried to give an encouraging smile "And if you want that to be with us then we'll open our hearts to you"
Dayna weakly smiled at Demi but looked down again "But what if Diana doesn't want me" she barely whispered
Demi lightly laughed "Dayna the woman practically forced me into making you stay. She begged me to keep you here.. She's on her way home" Demi told her the truth.
A hint of hope glimmered in Daynas eyes "okay" she nodded unsure of what else to say and neither did Demi.
Eventually they shifted from the music room and up to Demis room where she said Dayna could sleep. They talked for awhile about absolutely everything.. Dayna was a good kid she was just in the wrong place before.
______________
"So what about school" Demi asked. She was laying on her side supporting her head with her hand while looking over to the small figure laying beside her.
