VOICE LIKE LIQUID GOLD

I sit down on the floor, my back against the wall of the hall that leads to my room. May is inside the office right next to where I am, and the door isn't completely shut. I hear her hum before she starts singing a song I've never heard:

"I've tried to put away my love

I'm left with grief like a mourning dove

I'm in this constant state of limerence

I'm received with such indifference

To me, you're like sunshine after the rain

Without you I'm a winter's bane

If only you could see my glimmering eyes

If only you could hear how my heart cries

Let's create something between you and me

And together let's flee, shall we..."

I stand up and enter the office as she stops singing. She blinks and looks up to me, looking slightly confused as to why I suddenly burst into the room.

"Did you write it?"

It came out before I even thought about it. She frowns her eyebrows and wiggles on her chair before answering:

"Yes, a long time ago."

I feel the burning need to ask her if it was about someone, but I know it'll only hurt me if she says yes. As if she was reading my mind, she quickly adds:

"I'm still looking for the person I'll dedicate it."

I smile and we stare at each other. I'll find a way to make that person be me.
