I sit at our usual lunch table in the cafeteria, waiting for Dylan to come to make things interesting, or make me laugh.
I see him walking to me, but he gets sidetracked.
Who's he talking to?
Adalyn.
He glances at me. I give him a look. Aren't you going to sit with me? You always sit with me.
Instead, he looks back to Adalyn, and takes a seat next to her.
So I eat lunch in silence.
"What was THAT?" I say angrily as he meets up with me after lunch.
"I'm SORRY! She asked me to sit with her, okay?!"
Tears. Tears. No, stop, tears won't help.
I exhale, trying to calm myself down. They're not dating yet.
They're not dating yet.
NOT HELPING, JUNE.
Ugh.
"She wanted to sit with you?"
"Mmhm. Isn't it awesome? I mean, I didn't know she knew I existed!"
"Yeah." I say.
Dead. Dead meat, June. You are dead. Dead.
"I'm dead."
"Hmm?"
I said that out loud? Fuck.
"Nothing," I say quickly.
"Okay."
I sit in silence with him under our tree, the tree we've always hung out at. But then...
DUN-DUN-DUUUUUN!
Adalyn sat next to us. What is happening? WHAT? Ahhhh!
"Hey, Dylan," she says in a silky voice. I literally want to scream and punch our poor tree right now.
What?
"Hey Adalyn," says Dylan, clearly flustered.
I grit my teeth. How could this get any worse?
This sucks.
This is going to end, I vow to myself. Soon.
