I pray to god that today he won't look or even talk to me. I'm afraid that if I open my mouth, my feelings will take over me.
Basically, I don't really want to talk. I know, I sound like a bratty two-year-old throwing a temper tantrum. But I'm scared I'll let him know I like him. What if our friendship becomes awkward? That would be horrible.
Adalyn strolls up to me, big brown eyes open wide.
"June, do you know why Dylan isn't talking?"
"No," I say quickly.
"Oh. Okay. I was just thinking, you know, you're his best friend. Just thought you would know, and all..."
"Sorry I don't. I've tried to talk to him."
"June,"Adalyn says suddenly. "He talks about you a lot. And sometimes, honestly, I get a little jealous."
I blink. He talks about me? With Adalyn? I feel a little bit of happiness blooming up in my stomach.
"And I've seen the way you look at him while he's talking to you, June. You like him." She smiles at me, and all at once, this girl I thought would be my worst enemy, fiercest competitor....
She becomes my friend. A friend, not as close as Dylan, but close. Very, very close.
