[a/n]: this took me forever to write because I wanted it to be perfect but here goes nothing right?
P.S: I might change a few things later because I feel like this chapter could be better? But at the same time it's great. If you know what I mean.
Chapter 13. Vengeance - PART ONE
The sun rises all too early the next morning, my eyes groggily prying themselves open to face yet another day in the middle of nowhere. Everett is lying beside me on the wooden floor, the thin blanket draped around him as he rests on his stomach, his toned arms placed on either side of him. I sit up wearily, pulling the wool blanket closer to my body.
I yawn and nudge Everett awake. He blinks his tired eyes open and sends me a small smile as he stretches his limbs out, sitting up beside me.
His hand delicately reaches up to my cheek and strokes my face gently and unexpectedly places his lips to mine. I unravel in his arms and he chuckles against my lips, pulling back and twirling a strand of my hair behind my ear.
His eyes shift to something behind me and he frowns.
"What are they doing here?"
I hum in response, turning around to see my parents with their heads lowered and lips turned into deepening scowls through the window of the cabin; they're both drenched in thick, metallic blood.
And I scream.
"Clover!" I am shaken awake, tears falling from my eyes and desperate gasps for air sounding from my lungs.
My entire body trembles as I sit up straight and reach out for something to hold onto. I throw my arms around Everett's neck and struggle to catch my breath as he responds quickly, latching onto me in return. His hand runs through my hair in attempt to calm me down while he quietly hushes me, my face buried in the crook of his neck.
"You're okay..." he whispers, but it's hard for me to believe his words.
"They were here. They--They had blood, and were mad! I didn't mean to... I didn't mean to hurt them, Everett!" I cry as he continues to comb his fingers through my hair and hold my close.
"I know, Clove. It was just a dream. They're okay, and we're going to find them... today."
I shake my head in protest. "There's no way up that mountain. It's been a month, and we've only searched for them eight times."
"That's on me, and I'm sorry, but we're looking for them again today, okay?"
"You promise to help me?" I snivel and he nods, pushing away from him gently to meet my gaze.
"I swear to you, we will find your family."
"I think you've gained my trust back..."

The brisk air of the first October day drapes around me like a blanket and I shiver. Everett managed to stealthily snatch some clothes for me from the girl who lives out here, Thea. Now I can dress accordingly, with jeans, a warm sweater, a windbreaker, and some hiking boots. This morning Everett swore he would help me find my way back to my family, and for that I will be eternally grateful, however we've been coming up with ideas to hike up the mountain that won't end in death, but to no avail.
"What if we get rid of Charles? His place is right by the mountain, and he is the only guy standing in our way."
Everett and I are sitting on the steps of his cabin, scoping out the forest and devising a plan.
