Chapter 14. Vengeance - PART TWO

"Clover! Stop!"

Ignoring the incessant calls from behind me, I stay focused on the task at hand. I am determined to bring justice to my deceased family. Charles killed them for no reason! They were innocent human beings, out here looking for me.

I signed their death sentences; it was all my fault. They shouldn't have even been out here, and who knows how long they had been dead!

My determination leads me to the front of Charles' 'humble' abode. Angrily, I grab a small pebble lying at my feet and throw it at one of the windows; my aim perfect. With a strained voice, weak from my previous sobs, I shriek at the silent cabin.

"Get out here you coward! Charles! Get out here and face me like a man, you heartless bas--"

Suddenly an arm snakes around my waist and yanks me back forcefully, and when I fight back to stay put, they lift me off the ground and twirl me around quickly until the both of us are hidden behind a large tree beside the cabin. Everett's back is against the trunk of the tree facing away from the cabin with me in his lap, my back against his stomach; the both of us breathing heavily.

"Charles!"

Everett's hand clamps over my mouth and I reach out with my hands to escape, but to no avail. My screams of protest become muffled, and eventually my strength begins fading fast; my spirits crushed. The adrenaline kicks in once again when the cabin door is suddenly kicked open and a shotgun is cocked, the noise echoing throughout the atmosphere. Charles exits his cabin with his boots stomping across the creaking front porch.

"C'mon then! You challenged me, did you? Get out here and face me, you filthy roach!" Charles' throaty voice bellows, a small chuckle following his raging flow of words.

His threatening words anger me immensely, so much so that I begin wriggling in Everett's gasp. Evidently I am stronger than he expected, because he has to wrap his legs over mine to restrain me from leaping right out of his grasp. I scream a mouthful at Charles from beneath Everett's hand and my heart pumps wildly.

Charles deserves to die.

Charles killed my parents.

"Honey, call the guys in from their hunt on the walkie! Might need some extra manpower." Charles gruffly orders his wife, "Honey! Hey, where are you?"

Charles enters his cabin again, leaving us an opportunity to run for it, but I refuse to let him live as a free and innocent man. His voice trails off into the cabin and a gasp can be heard once he finds out his wife is taped up and in the empty bathtub. Everett lets out a sigh of relief once he knows we are alone, then he turns his attention towards me.

"Dammit, Clover! You could've gotten us both killed!" He whispers, taking his hand off of my mouth.

I shake my head, biting the inside of my cheek to keep from crying, but it is a weak attempt.

"He killed my parents, Everett. What was I supposed to do? They were innocent people!"

He clenches his jaw, probably feeling out of place since a girl is crying on his lap.
