Chapter 2. Finding Luck

Pain aches through my entire body, but mainly my back and shoulder, all because of the way I landed. Awaking from oblivion, I sit up a small amount with a groan. During my fall, I ripped a part of my joggers and scraped my face, arms and legs up pretty well. The gloomy clouds above me sprinkle rain onto my skin and I shiver from being out all night in the brisk weather.

Fishing my phone out of my pocket, I notice a crack through my iPhone screen due to my major fall, down that enormous cliff. Deciding to search for at least one bar, I dial my Mom's phone number and wait patiently.

Yes, I am a girl lost in the forest wearing joggers and Converse with no map on how to leave this place. And my pajama top is just a tank top because my parents told me it would be hot for the first two nights. Evidently, they were wrong because it was freaking cold. So, the only thing keeping me warm as of now is my jacket.

I stand up to my feet and peer up at the stupendous cliff I fell down last night. Luckily I managed not to break any of my bones, although I feel as though I broke every one.

"Mom, Dad?" I shout up to the top of the cliff.

The chirping of birds are my only response.

"Guess I should look for a way back up there.." I murmur to myself as I hold my mobile device up into the air in search of at least one bar to contact someone.

Turning away from the one-hundred foot cliff, I begin to traipse through the vast forest behind me. My only weapon being a stick I found just a minute ago. My shoes sink into the mud when I stride through this mysterious place, making my feet cold and dirty.

My mind traces back to the previous events and I begin to wonder what or who was pursuing me. It could have been a wolf, a bear, or maybe just a deer. All I know, is that it started following me because it was stalking its prey, which in this case, would be me.

A tiny mosquito flies over to me and lands on my right shoulder and tries to suck my blood through my jacket. Clicking my tongue at the pesky bug for its stupid idea, I shrug my shoulder to throw it off of me, but when I do this simple action, a monstrous pain shoots through my shoulder blade. Surprised from the sudden pain, I let out a small squeal of suffering.

Using my other arm to reach behind my injured shoulder, I gently touch my shoulder blade and wince from the agony.

"Must've done something to it on my trip down that stupid hill." I sigh to myself.

Peering up to the sky, I know it will soon rain because of the gloomy clouds swarming the bright blue sky. Seeing as how my only source of warmth is my jacket and joggers, it would be wise of me to find shelter or to build a fire since heavy rain will be coming and the wind will seemingly grow brisker.

An hour has passed, yet still no sign of shelter or animals, for that matter. The only animals I have seen are birds, really. If there are any other animals down here, they seem to be hiding or I happen to have an animal repellent on me. The damp dirt on the ground sinks into my muddy Converse and I huff out a breath of distress, and because of the cold weather, my breath is actually visible; portraying out in front of me like a cold, misty cloud of air. With a shiver, I spin around in a circle in search of civilization. The sprinkles of rain fall from the sky and patter against the trees all around me, dropping upon the leaves and onto the dirt of the ground.

"Hello?" I shout for the hundredth time, cupping my hands over my mouth to make my voice louder.

Pulling my jacket closer to my body, I continue walking through the enchanting forest. Two lefts, fifteen minutes straight, and a turn to the right, luck happens to find me. My tired eyes squint with wet rain droplets stuck to my eyelashes as I notice a cabin not far from where I stand. Shock fills within me at the fact that someone else is here; actually living in the forest.
